Hi will need to take Barney for a haircut soon. I dont know what to expect when I go (or how to find one in my area). Can any one give me any advice. How do I find a grooming shop (do I look in phone book), can I stay while he is being groomed so I know he is okay or is it better to leave him to it. Please dont take offence if this is your job if I sound like I dont trust people but I just want to know he is safe and happy and I have no idea of what to expect. Many thanks Gina

You're right to be cautious Gina. Your best guide is to ask someone in your area who has a well trimmed dog where they go. I don't allow owners to stay with their dogs because, like children, they can misbehave when Mum's around, but I am quite happy for owners to watch me work on another dog to see how I work and handle it. There are many "sheep shearers" out there, and it really is worth finding a trained and experienced groomer even if it costs a little more, because they can help in so many ways, especially if your breed is new to you.
The phone book is one of the worse places to look. Anyone who pays their money can be found in there. I started grooming professionally 15 years ago. I advertised for 3 months and haven't needed to since. My work is my best advertising so ask around owners in your area. Good luck.

Thanks Val. I think I will ask at the vets because I dont know any one with a dog where I live ( there are only 4 houses in my small road and would you believe only one of my friends has a dog who is a young lab pup so I wont have much luck there. Do you think the vet would be able to help or have you any other suggestions. I wont look in the phone book. Oh, the puppy training clubs (I cant get Barney in any at all where I live so am having to try and train him myself LOL) but they may be able to help me perhaps ?? Many thanks Gina
PS Dont suppose you are near Purley!!!

Is that Purley on Thames??? The Vets is a good idea. They often send me dogs, but these days I'm not in a position to take them on.
