Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Staffie in a new house
- By TanyaP [gb] Date 07.12.03 00:50 UTC
We recently moved house and our staffie bitch has reverted back to the chewing and soiling on the floor. When we are home she is fine ask's to go in the garden etc but when we go out even if it is for 10 mins she messes on the floor. In the old house we had got past this stage, but since the move we just don't know what to do with her. We may be expecting too much from her it has only been a month but there seems to be no improvement. Also with the chewing (mainly anything of mine she can find) is this just to punish us for leaving her alone in a new home? Please help!

When you say leaving her alone...for how long?

It sounds as though the house move has really unsettled her and she still doesn't feel 'at home' in the new house. Perhaps you need to go back to treating her as a new puppy for a few weeks till she settles. Her chewing is most likely to be a nervous 'displacement activity' to try to calm herself. If you leave her with a stuffed Kong or similar when you go out, and restrict her access to a smaller area (using puppy panels or similar), she will probably get out of the habit. She's not 'punishing you' - dogs don't think like that!

Good luck.

I Agree with Jeangenie - dogs don't transfer beahviours from one place to another as easily as we might think, and I expect this is what is going on - make sure she has plenty of things you don't mind her chewing and practise leaving her as much as you can for very short periods so she learns to be alone - reward her if she's done nothing while you're gone.  You might also think about getting her a crate so she has somewhere she can call her own - most dogs like it covered with something (but make sure she can't pull it in and chew it!) and it will help to keep her away from things you don't want chewed.  But it would be best to help her learn she will be OK in the new house.....
