Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Beagle doesnt stop eating!!

Barney is 6 months old, been wormed regularly and never stops eating. he is 15kg and the vet has said he must lose a little weight - the trouble is that I have him on a Bakers Lite diet, and am giving him carrot and apple for treats but he is still starving. He will eat leaves and twigs and has started eating the Dane's faeces again, which he did originally and had stopped. He was still showing signs of hunger before the diet so you can imagine what he is like now!
I know he is a pack animal and will always be enthusiastic to eat quickly, but is this normal and how do I stop him being permanently hungry! He walks about 40-60 mins a day and plays energetically in the garden with the Dane when he wants to.

If he is overweight he is greedy not hungry, some dogs will eat and scrounge all day.  Keep him on the diet the vet has advised, it will be better for him in the long run.  I take it he has been wormed.

The walks of 40 to 60 minutes a day should be broken up into short walks at this age and not too much free running.

Don't worry, you have a greedy dog not a hungry one.

What are you feeding the Dane?  He may also be getting too much and the excess nutrients can pass out in the faeces - this could be why the Beagle is eating them.  Alternatively the Danes diet could simply be too 'rich' and this excess is being passed.  Could you investigate giving him something that will keep him occupied (such as a Buster cube) so the time he spends eating is longer? Or a Kong stuffed with low fat youghurt (if he's not lactose intolerant) and frozen......

Welcome to the wonderfull world of beagles!  They are very greedy and if you keep putting the food down, they will eat it!  Eating his or others p**p is also a bit of a beagle thing, I know mine does and so do most other peoples!  I have tried every remedy heard of and the one that works best is ......... look the other way.

As for eating other things, I would make sure there are always loads of  chew toys about for him, but again my boy just chews and eats anything, I just try to beagle proof everywhere.

Do try to keep the weight down, a fat beagle is not a healthy one.

The Buster dog cube is probably the best money I have ever spent on  my dog, it is a great way of feeding dogs who bolt their food and greedy dogs as they spend so long getting the food out!!  :)  I use it now to give my terrier something to do if I am busy.

My two beagles love their food. The 18 month old one has never really had a problem with weight as i feed the amount for her weight on the food packet and she is so energetic. She doesn't sit down for a minute.
However the 6 month one is quite chubby. She wants to eat everything in sight including twigs and leaves but i think that is a puppy thing not because shes hungry. She would also eat poo given half a chance so i always try to pick it up as soon as either of them have done one.
Carrots are good as treats as its surprising how the biscuit type treats can pile the weight on. How many times a day do you feed your dog ? I have found 3 smaller meals a day are better for them as they don't have a long time to wait for the next meal.

I have the opposite problem. My beagle wont eat.  Such a fuss pot.  I have to coax him to eat, he bhas arden grange mixed with either tuna or a bit of chiken or rice.  Never known a non greedy beagle before a complete novalty  My vet says not to worry as he wont starve himself

Am concerned that you are feeding your pup on a 'Light' food, this is not a good idea, feed less of a quality junior food, puppies do put on weight, but will lose it again as they reach puberty. Most hound we eat if you let them so buy a good junior food and cut back slowly until he starts to hold his weight, I would not try to reduce the weight of a puppy just hold it steady till nature takes over and you will be posting asking how to put some weight on.

A puppy should not be on a "light" diet.  It does not contain sufficient protein or calcium for a growing dog.   Feed your dog less of a high quality puppy or junior food - and take him on some longer walks or play with him more than you are now.
