Just a quick query. 

A dog that I bred has been having problems in recent months and I wanted to see if the problem was anything to do with my breeding ? hereditary!! As the owner doesn't seem to be able to tell me properly what's wrong.

As I was passing their vets yesterday I popped in to see if I cd. have a quick word and was told yes that wd. be fine.  Booked an appointment went back sat there for 50 minutes to be finally seen.  He phoned the owner who said that they didn't know me or the breeder!!!  I'm the same person and have known them for about 20 yrs!!!

Vet wdn't tell me the prognosis or anything.  I wanted to know whether my bitch being traumatised during my break in at 5 weeks pregnant, ending up 6 foot hight on a garage and falling of it and then being stuck for three and a half hours in a very small confined area cd. of caused any problems but he didn't want to discuss it.

I can now see why people don't do all the checks etc. when someone who cares about their breed wants to make sure that they've done nothing wrong but comes up against a brick wall!!

I know about confidentiality, but doesn't the person who brought it up for the most vital few weeks of it's life and who loves and cares for many members of it's family deserve to know what's going on.  Unfortunately, I am now questioning whether something they've done has a part to play in it because why else wd. you say that you don't know someone who you've known for many years?

You can see why people don't do checks - just because a vet is bound by the laws of confidentiality and won't discuss a puppy you bred, but you don't own any more? He can't discuss it by law! The dog is no longer your property, so you can't expect him to say "ooh yes, such and such did this and that and thats why this and that happened".

This is the thing with breeders who don't do checks which anooys me - they want it all their own way. Buyers are expected to sign contracts promising to return the dog if anything goes wrong, only use it for purposes stated etc etc...but what about the breeders duty of care to the potential purchaser?

If you carried out all the checks on your puppy, and homed him in a checked family, then you have done all you can. I'm probably best off not answering this kind of thing at the moment - because I am on the other side of the fence, and its not a nice place to be :(

Just because your breeder doesn't do all the checks don't call us all.  I do, do the checks that I feel are necessary for my breed, although the breed club doesn't ask for these!

I have tried my best to find out what is wrong with the dog and been blocked by the owner and now the vet.  I'm a breeder who cares about her breed and that is why I went to see if I could find out any information about the dog.  The owners actually paid half price for her as I wanted to show her so she is still partly owned by me, although not with her vets!!

NOT ALL BREEDERS ARE THE SAME.  Some of us do care about our dogs and the dogs that we sell, so don't get nasty with every person who breeds dogs. 

I want to make sure that this isn't something that the vet may think is hereditary as I wdn't want a dog to go through the same thing.

If you had sold a dog and something was wrong with it wdn't. you want to find out why it's happened? Maybe, more than likely it is something that "just happened" and no-one is to blame, but I wd. like to know that for sure.

I'M SORRY FOR BEING SOMEONE WHO CARES ABOUT THE DOGS I SELL, BUT I DO.  If I hadn't of shown interest in this I wd. of been called an uncaring breeder who doesn't care less, so really I can't win.

One other thing, I bet that every single breed of dog has something wrong with it, but not every breed is checked, maybe we shd. become more like America but it isn't happening at the moment.

Did I accuse you of not doing checks? No! I said "the thing with breeders who don't do checks...." in response to your post saying that you can see why people don't do checks.

Yes, I can understand why you are interested in your pups welfare, but, IMO you can't expect their vet to discuss the situation with you.

My argument with your post is that you said you can see why people don't do checks, having just been stone-walled by the vet. I don't think its a valid reason IMO.

As I said I do do checks and it annoys me too people who don't.  Wording always comes out wrong when you are upset and boy am I upset at the moment, not because of what you've said though :d  I said that in the heat of the moment because I'm a person who want's to know what is happening and wants to make sure that they are doing the right thing.  I have been blocked by two people now and don't know why.  All that I can take with not being advised on what is wrong that I shdn't. feel to blame as I've now done all I can.

So all that I can say is that I wd. like to do checks and make sure that nothing happens but sometimes you can't as this shows.  I always take things to heart so if something happens I will question why, even though I know in my heart of hearts that I did nothing wrong.  Not everyone's like this I know, but I think that it does good to be able to question yourself.

I am a breeder, so sorry if I took the post the wrong way, but still feel that it was hinted at me, rightly or wrongly!! 

Anyway, don't want to keep on going on about it as it's not helping matters one little bit. Take care and I hope that your dogs score comes back not too bad, but i can tell by all of your previous posts that you love your baby no matter what and that's all that counts!!

Ditto me! Same here :) I'm firing from the hip (so to speak!) at the moment, and no-one is more guilty of writing things I don't mean than me at the moment :( ! I know you are a responsible and ethical breeder from your posts on here, and I honestly can understand why you are worried. Sorry for being harsh - but from my other post, you can probably see why I'm upset. Good luck with finding out about your pup.

Maybe the owner is being funny with you as they don't want you to have anything to do with her? Obviously if she is half yours you are still entitled to know what's going on so write them a snotty letter asking for her to be brought to you for 'evaluation' to see is she is still potential show quality?

Did you draw up a contract or did you just trust them?

Hope you get to the bottom of it :)

Why don't you have a word with your vet - maybe the other vet will talk to him/her?   You know what "professionals" are like talking to us "mere mortals" - even if we do know a bl**dy sight more about our dogs than they do!

Hope you can satisfy yourself in your own mind how things are.
