Can someone please help me.  I have two staffs a 5 year old dog (red) and a 5 year old bitch (dark brindle).  Unfortunately three days after receiving the bitch she came into season and my dog is going nuts.  We were told by our vet to keep them seperated but it has made matters worse.  He is constantly wetting, whinning and howling which he has never done before.  Can anyone suggest something to calm the situation?  How much longer she is going to be in season as I have been receiving conflicting information from one vet to another?  She has stopped standing and has started to growl at my dog.

They are both rescued and she only weighs 13.02kilos which is why we have not yet had her spayed.

Hi Guest
Cant offer much help I'm afraid
I only have a male at present but I have heard its quite common for the males to get upset and even pine and go off their food at this time .
I will be quite interested to hear the answer to this one as I am looking into the possibility of getting a female next year .

Can I just ask if they are both rescues why they havent been neutered or speyed as I thought this was common practice in rescues ???

Thank you for all your help and advice.  I tried the bitch spray and I was more prepared to put up with her sneezing than the dogs in the garden.  As you gave me such great help I have decided to register onto the forum and really enjoying it.

She has now finished her season and she is turning out to be quite the bully to poor Jasper.  I think he has now learnt not to take ny nonsense from her as yesterday when they were playing he grabbed hold of her collar and smacked her round the head with his paw before she get a grip.  This seems to have done the trick as she is not so boisterous (at the moment).

As for the answer to the question about them not being spayed, couldn't tell you.  When I enquired with the rescue charity involved they said that I should receive a voucher in the post and I was to take her back to the borough where she came from to one of the vets there and they would spay her for me.

Hi Naomi,

Glad to hear things have calmed down a bit for you now!!  It's very difficult isn't it?
I have a bitch in season at the moment, and 2 entire dogs going absolutely mental!! One's off his food, another's trying to climb the walls of his kennel....oh, the joys of dog ownership!!

Hope you enjoy yourself here at Champdogs..it can become very addictive you know! :D

Take care,

Lisa

Hi,
A bitch's season lasts an average of 21 days. It is perfectly normal for the male to be as distressed as this (which is why not many people keep both entire dogs and bitches!), but keeping them apart is the only thing to do. Many people kennel one or other of them for the duration, because it is stressful to them to be together in the same house, let alonethe same room, at this time.

If you wash her bedding a lot, and give her a good bath when she is out of season he will soon get back to normal.
:)

As JG says this is why most peolpe don't keep dogs and bitches unless they are spayed/castrated.I would love to have a bitch but would not put my 2 boys through the stress every 6 months.
Well done for keeping them apart! The only ways to stop it happening next season are either to spay / catrate your dogs or to find someone to board your male when the bitch is in season

Keeping entire dogs & bitches together (or apart!) is a nightmare. You can be lucky & have a sensible dog, but there is no way to predict how a dog will react. They can also act differently from season to season. Get through this season & have one of them neutered before the next. BTW, 3 wks is only an average, make very sure she has finished her season before you leave them alone. My bitch has just been mated on her 20th & 21st day (on purpose!)

look there is a spray you can get to help ,it goes directly on the bitch in seson .i use it while walking mine as it helps keep dogs away ,ask your local vets they should be able to help you:)

:D :D :D :D

Unfortunately this can be just as much a signal to entire dogs that a bitch is in season!  (They don't seem to have read the label)!
