Hi,

May seem a silly question but is it possible to mistaken a small working lab (Golden colour) as a rhodesian?

Was out walking before and a bloke on the field whom we have been talking to for a while now said that she is a rhodesian, isn't she?

We said no a lab, so he said the golden retiriever was a lab,  we said she wasn't she was a retriever and he was adamant that she is a lab and that the lab was a rhodesian.

Anyone else been told that thier dog doesn't look like the breed its suppose to be?

Oh also red and white setters dont excist and i have been fooled 5 times over, that what someone told me!!!!!!!

Yep, my white shepherd boy is often mistaken for a Pyranean or a Samoyed but my Labs have never been accused of being a Ridgeback. One has to wonder if this man has ever seen a Ridgeback :D

Apparently I own a GSDXHusky & miniature Huskies. Oh & a couple of white Foxes & a few little Wolves.

Walk after walk, with my wheatens, they are either one of two:
1) a mongrel
2) a Old english sheep dog!!!!!

They are WHEATEN in colour, they do not have big patches of white of grey, they are not as BIG as an oesd, and they look nothing like them!!!

And the times you have to EXPLAIN to EVERYBODY whom you happen to meet on your walks what breed you have, and that they are none of the above!

My male wheaten is a Briard puppy! But usually they're mongrels, and must be a family to look so alike!

a BRIARD!!!! lol.

I must admit, i have has that one a few times, but it really gets my blood boiling when i find out that i have not got pedigree dogs, but mongrels. ARGH!!

My friends have a liver flat-coat and you should hear what she gets called!. Mostly, she is a 'funny looking irish setter' but she's been called just about anything that vaguely comes in that colour.

We used to have a pure bred mongrel who was regularly called "a baby wolf" or a "alsation" but  never once did anyone say "he's a mongrel" Cody took no notice to be honest, sometimes for fun I used to say yes he is a Wolf and his pack are over the hill/behind the tree, I was younger then :D though lol.

Have to admit that on one occasion when we just had the two wheatens, they went bounding along to play with a families springers in the stream, and the little girl said what lovely dogs they were, and on asking mummy what breed they were was told "only mongrels", I just had to point out to mummy that they were indeed a proper breed, but even if they were "only" mongrels, it would not make them any less lovely. Perhaps mummy is not so snobby now, but I doubt it. :D

Told this story before, but will tell it again. Used to take my Elkhounds to work with us, and a customer insisted that they were GSD crossed with a wolf, no matter how much I told him otherwise and pointed out that the 4 hounds were at least 2 years apart in age, he would not be persuaded and in the end reported me to the council for breeding wolf crosses. They sent the dog warden around who luckily knew his dogs, and laughs his head off. Wonder what would have happened if my local warden had not been so knowledgeable, guess my hounds would have been in danger of being destroyed.

I can see a market for dog t shirts saying " Im an Elkhound" or " Im a SCWT"  or in our case, " Large friendly dog, dont ask". Morse has been a Pointer, a Greyhound, a Foxhound, a Dalmatian and now SB tells everyone hes a Tripehound with his fake Teutonic accent :D

I used to show Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens a few years back when there were very few in the country and they'd literally just achieved their first CC's.  We were at a big Championship show on Hound day and walking the pack of them to the benches when this woman stopped us and informed us that "mongrels" were not allowed on the grounds and would we please remove them...I guess she had never seen one before but did she have to be quite so rude!!  Never mind...I guess she'll always recognise them from now on!

Walking my rather nice bitch up the steps from the car park at the G Mex to the Manchester Show venue and was joined by a lady that said, you would not get one of those posh show dogs walking up the stairs they use the lift, bet you are glad you got a x breed but don't go near the entrance all them dogs have diseases you know not one of them can stand on it's own. Have to admit I was so gob smacked I could not reply. Bet you don't believe I did not give a mouth full, but I didn't I was totally stunned..

As to tghe rodision well unless your lab has hair going the wrong way up the back then its not a RR is it???

And also a RR is so much taller then a lab!

I see it happens to quite a few of us then.  We know what our dogs are but others insist they aren't what they are suppose to be.

I could understand him saying the retriever was a lab because they are similar looking(well I think they are, others may disagree though).

Had a look on few sites and I'm convinced my little Soph is definately a lab and not a rhodesian.

I think it must be the colour with her being so golden, most of the labs I've seen are Yellow these days, or of course chocolate or black.

Yes, my working cocker pup is often mistaken for a flat coated retriever.  People always express surprise when I say she is a cocker and say she looks nothing like other cockers (ie. the show type - but most people don't seem to know the difference)!

Oh yes - with the Maremmas I get golden retrievers all the time (except mine are white...) - or Newfies (except mine are white...) - or occasionally white shepherds...(well at least they got the colour right!)  Even when I say no they are Maremmas the reply is usually - "well aren't they JUST LIKE golden retrievers/Newfies/white shepherds" - no, not really..... :rolleyes:

The ones who ask if they are Pyreneans are quite refreshing - at least they have got the right type of dog - after all I wouldn't expect many people to have heard of a Maremma!
In fact I have only once had someone come up to me in the street and say "is that a Maremma?" - I was speechless! :)

We've been asked if our Spinoni are Wolfhounds, and not just by one person either :O

Somebody in the park recently asked me if my Bordeaux puppy was a pit bull????!!!!! Another asked me "What kind of labrador is that?" Most look at me with a blank expression when I tell them what he is anyway ( - getting tired of explaining that he is like the dog out of "Turner and Hooch" which is sad but seems to be the only way of making people understand what he is)

It is funny looking at these posts, some of the things people have thought your dog are!  But a lab and a Ridgeback?  Mine dosnt look like a lab!

I was at an open show not too long ago in the AVNSC Hound Open, when the judge pointed to me and said "the bassett 1st please"  so I stood still.  He said it again.  I still stood still.  "come on your 1st!" ,  who me? but its a beagle!  He went red and said yes yes come on! 

Hes quiet a nice dog realy! Never thought he looked like a bassett!  Needless to say we did no good in BIS as the judge didnt like long legged, short eared bassetts!

Think that is a bit like me always calling a Goldie a Lab, I know the difference but don't engage the brain.

I've been told that my Vizslas are definitely "Ridge-less Ridgebacks" !!!!! and I also had a lady tell me that my dogs were Weims, and she wouldn't accept that I knew what breed of dog I actually own! :0

people are always surprised when i tell them jack is a cross and not a springer as they thought the conversation usually goes 'hes a lovely looking springer, a bit on the small side though, how old is he? is he still a pup?' to which i reply 'hes a cross hes nearly a year old now, and hasnt got much growing left to do', 'ohhh hes a lovely looking springer though isnt he?'

Well, salukis are not so popular here in Japan, but Borzois are a kind of popular breed for snotty people who think they know everything about dogs, so I often have a bit of a laugh to myself as people see Dill and knowingly inform their friends that he is a borzoi.  I've also been asked why on earth I've shaved my Afghan, and although slightly different, I can't count the number of times I've been accused of starving my dog because he has the correct two ribs showing, which p***es me off intensely!

Join the "dog starvers" club with me Salukidill! :D Morse is a naturally slim dog although he packs away plenty food and weighs 20.4 KG. His ribs show because he is part greyhound. I often wonder if the nation is in a mess because all these knowledgable people are wandering about criticising dog owners! Im curious to know how big, running hounds like Salukis and Borzois manage in such a densely developed place as Japan. How do they fit into the flats and where do you exercise them?

You're right, it's lucky there are so many people in the world who know more about dogs than their owners!!!

As for running hounds in Japan, well, there aren't that many - about 100 salukis registered each year and a few more Borzois and Afghans, but Japan (and even Tokyo) is not so terribly crowded as you might think.  True, nobody has acres except farmers, but there are plenty of houses with small gardens as opposed to high-rise apartment blocks.  Dog runs are currently being set up in a lot of city parks, and since Japan has a habit of building dams on every single river, this leaves huge grassy riverbanks which are perfect for exhausting even a saluki.  Tokyo is also perfect for socializing a dog because there is nowhere where nothing is happening!

I live in a large-ish apartment with a large-ish balcony, ten minutes walk from a park with a dog-run, and ten minutes drive from one of these riverbanks, so we do OK.  I dream of a house on the outskirts of Glasgow with an acre or so of land and two or three more salukis (and a couple of deerhounds for good measure), but for the time being I'll be staying here.

Wouldn't be the first time I've been asked if my RR "had deliberately been clipped like that and does he mind".  And "what sort of crossbreed is it" got positively boring.

If he thinks a lab looks like an RR he needs glasses (or a new prescription)

My smooth fell terrier was a lab puppy all his life and I had to take extra care that strangers did'nt pick him up!!! not wise without an introduction.

When out with my Bullmastiffs people are always saying "those are the first boxers I've seen with a tail".

I was out walking my dogs at the weekend and someone dared ask me if my Samoyed was a American Eskimo......I mean, really!  Eskimo's are extremely small and my Sam is rather on the large size!  People have also asked me if my Malamute is a wolf.  Still, I get that all the time!!!  Or on the odd occasion, people have asked me if he's a Husky, to which I reply no, and then they say, "Well they're the same anyway"!

My Lab is often accused of being a Ridgeback or even a Shar Pei!

I was once asked if my patterdale was a yorkie....that dinted the poor lad's ego a bit.

When we walk our dog's we alway's get "Look at the baby Greyhound's" and if we say they are Whippet's they ask if they are small greyhound's. I don't think they know whippet's are a different breed of dog.
