Topic Dog Boards / Health / Wiemeraner Ear problems.

I wonder if anyone can help. My brother has a 4 year old spayed Wiemeraner bitch kept as a pet. We have been experiencing problems with her ears for over a year now, from time to time, the vessels in her ear bursts an her ear fills with fluid and blood. She has seen a vet on a number of occasions and he has prescibed numerous ear drops, then finally got her in for surgery which involved, cutting an 'S' shape on the inner flap of her ear, to make her blood vessels shorter. This seemed to work for about 6 months then her same ear has filled again this week. She has been back to the vets an they have drained the ear twice. Her ears are kept clean, so it is not dirt that is causing this. Has anyone had a similar experience or do you have any advice on how to avoid this. She does have 'long' ears, and i guess that she bangs them and shakes her head which makes them fill up. If anyone has any advice or experience in anything similar to this it would be much appriciated.

The first thing I would ask is what is actually causing this.  If the dog is shaking her ears I would want to examine why.  Weimis have long folded ears which can cause problems when they get hot running about and ear shaking or scratching can be caused by an irritation such as an allergy and/or a yeast overgrowth.  I clean my dogs ears every week with colloidal silver and put some Thornit powder down afterwards.  You may well find this helps.
