Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Lowchen is she Jealous of new baby?
- By Louie [gb] Date 03.12.03 23:55 UTC
We have a lovely 13 month old lowchen, also a 5 month old baby and 3 cats. Our dog has always been happy and lively, but recently she has become a little subdued. I try to give her as much attention as possible, but it is hard with a baby. When our baby sleeps, which he does on and off in the day, i am often with the dog playing with her, or around her. Some times when she sees me with the baby she will sit looking very sad in her basket and refuse to come out. I am wondering if she is jealous. She gets walked twice a day, and  comes out when i pop to the shops. I dont know what else i can do to make her happy. She also has been a little snappy in the last few days. Any suggestions?

I'd get her checked by the vet to rule out a medical problem before anything else, especially as she has begun snapping.  At 5 months babies are changing from being sedentary things to being much more mobile, and she may be begining to find this threatening/scarey.  Becareful of rewarding the 'melancholy' behaviour by paying her attention when you see her looking sad (hard I know) but if she finds out that she gets ignored when she tries it, she's more likely to drop it if she's doing it for attention only. And ofcourse it goes without saying that you should be very wary of leaving the two of them alone.

Have her checked by the vet, she may not be feeling well.

If she checks out fine than you need to teach her that the baby is a good thing.  Pay attention to your dog when you interact with the baby.   You can talk to her, you can toss her a little treat, or a toy.  If you blank your dog out when you pay attention to the baby, only pay attention to the dog when the baby is asleep, then your dog cannot assume anything other than the baby is the "problem."
