Topic Dog Boards / Health / peeing after spaying
- By debbie88 [gb] Date 04.12.03 20:08 UTC
Hi,

Can anyone tell me whether its normal for a bitch to be having accidents indoors after being spayed two days ago. She was totally clean before but since she's been home we've had several accidents.

Thanks Deb

She will still be suffering the effects of the anaesthetic and may well improve as she recovers. However it is a result of spaying, sometimes because of damage caused during the operation and sometimes because of the loss of the hormones that cause loss of muscle tone. Give it a few days things may improve, if they don't return to your vet who will be able to help.

Hi Deb,

She may be sore and that could very well be affecting her now.

Of course she will be sore, this is a major operation, in fact a hysterectomy, but it should not be causing her to  be incontinent.

I think we will have to return to the vets as Cassie is now pooing & peeing all over the place (she was totally clean before the op), shes not even sniffing around so we can't tell that she's about to do anything and I'm even considering calling the emergency out of hours vet as she has just been sick with what looks like poo (sorry thats all I can describe it as), she is also trembling quite a bit and is pretty lethargic ..god I feel so sorry for her..She's eaten a little and is drinking ok. Its almost a week now since she was spayed. Do you think I should wait till Monday or call vet now??

Thanks Deb

I would ring your vet NOW   She should appear to be almost back to normal by now

Please let us know how you get on when you get back from your vet - don't reply now - RING VET

Yes sounds like a problem, get the vet now and do let us know.

hi all,

Many thanks for replying earlier, I actually rang the vet anyway before I read the boards as I got too worried. We took Cassie down there and she did just what my children do when I take them to the doctors. She perked up at the surgery...sniffed around the door so I took her outside where she did her business (memory is obviously coming back). The vet said she seemed fine stitches healing up great and Cassie was on top form. Since we've got back she's been outside to do everything and eaten all her tea and been bounding around quite happily..I think she just likes to see me worry. Nevertheless I'm glad we took her and she seems on top form now..

Thanks again

Hi Deb

Shows how wrong we can be :) - from your description of lethargic and trembling on top of everything else it sounded as if she had an infection - did your vet explain why she was having problems ?

Hi Christine,

Yo're right the vet said maybe Cassie had a mild infection but didn't perscribe anything as she seemed so well, But she did say if I was worried to bring her straight back, but thankfully she had a great night and is in tip top condition this morning. I think it was the trembling that worried me most. I still can't believe how much she perked up, litle moo :) but we love her anyway.

Thanks everyone for your help

I read the post Jackie.  If she is sore or very bruised internally she may not even be feeling the urge to pee.
