Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Barking Nightmare!!
- By JACQUIH [gb] Date 04.12.03 10:37 UTC
I have two rough collies both just over a year old. The male has a major barking problem. The minute he leaves the house, be it into the garden or the street he just barks non stop, even if there is nothing to bark at. I have tried everything, I have been on a training course with him and we managed to get the barking under control within the lessons but the minute he gets home he's back to normal. When guests visit i worry he's going to keel over sometimes becuase he gets so worked up with excitement! Can anyone help?????!!!!

I think you need to try and get inside his head and discover *why* he's barking - is it excitment, frustration, fear???  Once you can understand it you have a better chance of developing a stratagy to stop it.

Thanks Digger,
There are two very different barks. The one where he is out in the garden is definately a protective thing. He runs up and down our back fence as if he is defending our territory. Then when we have vistors it is most definately and excitement thing. He absolutely loves people and craves their attention by virtually bowling them over and liking them to death, but the more people try and hug him or stroke him as he wants, the more hysterical he gets.
We have tried ignoring him when he gets too excited but
this hasn't worked.
Any Ideas?

For the 'visitors' thing get a baby gate/dog gate and put him behind it so that he can see the visitors but not get to them.  Ignore him until he is calm ( may take ages until he gets the idea) and then allow him to meet and greet, but only if he stays calm.  He should get the idea eventually.
Is your dog barking all the time in the garden? Defending your territory from what?? Do you have invaders? :D  he could be winding himself up, my dog started doing this and it was easily dealt with, I just got him inside every time he started more than a few barks, he soon realised that if he wanted to stay outside then he had to be fairly quiet.  Now he only barks if there's someone hanging around out there.
As far as barking as soon as you go out of the door I would have him on a lead and the second he started go straight back inside, no comments or scolding, and wait about 10 minutes before trying again, any barking and repeat the retreat! three attempts on the first day, no success= no walk.  Next day the same, soon he'll start thinking that he's not getting anywhere, and will bark later on (maybe as you get a few yards down the street) the important thing is to go straight home again (as for the first few days) and try 3 times then leave it for that day.  YOU'll probably find that he starts barking later and later in the walk.
I did this when my dog was barking in the car (very loudly) it took a few weeks of persistence but now he's quiet and calm when we travel, and only gives a whimper when he's exceptionally excited :)  As he started getting the idea (barking later and later) I would look at him and say "wasting time now" and stop the car.  He soon linked these words with not going anywhere and things progressed really quickly after that.
Hope this gives you some ideas, the results will depend on your dog and you :)

Regards
Dill

Hi I have just posted on here about my lab pup biting visitors and getting over-excited,but I also have a "barking" problem. I have new neighbours who only moved in last week, and they have a collie which barks and howls non-stop every time they go out.Up till now Star has been fine when i have left her to go to the shopsetc.,but now she is barking too .When she goes into the garden she barks non-stop at this dog next door, and when I leave her now,I can hear her barking too. I have tried turning the radio up loud to try and drown out the noise coming from next door, but she can still hear it,and it's upsetting her. i don't want to complain,as they seem a nice cuople, but I am really frustrated,as Star never made a sound when left alone, and I know that it is a hard habit to break.I just seem to be lurching from one problem to another with her lol.The advice you got about the barking seems good, but dont know if it would work for me,under these circumstances

I know how much you don't want to complain to your new neighbours but I think you are going to have to approach them, their dog sounds distressed, it may be that the dog was happy enough before the move but now is getting distressed by their absence.  This is now affecting your dog too, and can only get worse.  It may be that they have no idea that this is happening and would be upset if they knew (it may also be that they don't give a £$^3 and wouldn't welcome 'interference')  the key to this is tact.
It might be a good idea to stop your dog barking non-stop at theirs in the garden, they will only wind themselves up and things can get out of hand, they could end up fighting if they ever found themselves without a fence between them

Hope this helps and good luck with the neighbours, I hope they are as nice as they seem.

Regards
Dill

Hi Dill,Thanks. Yes its a tricky situation,as they might not be aware of how much their dog barks when they leave her. She is a 10 year old collie cross apparantly, and doesn't like Star at all. It's a bitch too so dont know if that has any bearing. Star runs to the fence to make friends ,but the collie is making runs at her, snarling and barking. She never actually connects though, which makes me think it is all bluff. We only have a low fence there at the moment, but intend to put a higher one in,as Star will be able to get over that one shortly. Its the constant barking and howling which is driving me nuts, and causing Star to bark in response.I think I will probably have to say something, but don't know what they can do about it really. You can't expect them to stay in all day,and I think she works in the afternoons,as thats when it starts.
