Topic Dog Boards / General / Bad things about 'More Than' Insurance??
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 03.12.03 17:48 UTC
Anyone know of any?

I've been advised against supermarket ins by my vet and from the other 'reputable' companies I think the 'more than' one looks best value for me. It's actually a little dearer then Pet plan but has better benefits :)

Are they ok for paying out etc?

I've got Libby insured thru More Than, and to date they've paid out promptly, so no complaints here :)
I've recommended them to a couple of friends, who have also found no problems with them.

Thanks Liberty - that's a name I'm considering for my pup :) Had wanted it for the daughter but hubby put his foot down ;)

Oh grumpy hubby!! :) I think Liberty is a lovely name for a little girl, as well as a dog, but then I am biased :D

I've got no problems with them either, prompt to pay out when you have a claim
and a genuinely A1 service.
Thumbs up from here :D

Was pretty sure that if anyone had had a bad time with them they would have let me know so that's another decision made :D :D :D

Hi Wishfairy,

I have my Bullmastiff bitch insured with More Than. She ruptured her cruciate ligament at the beginning of the year and was referred to a University Veterinary School. I had no problem with More Than paying out, however be aware that the excess is 15% (something I hadn't realised and ended up having to pay over £500 for Ellies operations)

I had realised it was 15% but the pet plan quote I got was £60 or 25% whichever is highest  so I thought 15% was acceptable.

Out of interest, do 'More than' cover 'for life' or for 12 months per illness/injury only?  I used to insure with DBI (since 1972!) and they change from life to 12 months when Cornhill took them over.  I wouldn't use them again - dirty trick.

More than cover up to £6000, per illness, with no time scale. My other dog is insured with DBI,  and I know how you feel :(

That's good then.

My vet told me a couple of years ago that many of the 'new' pet insurers (Tesco, sainsbury's etc) are a good deal a the moment, but he thinks that they can do because - to start with - they will mostly be insuring younger dogs, so they won't have such a big payout over all.  However he thinks that when they have been going a few years and start taking the hit from old dogs, they will change their ways!  As it happened with DBI I can quite understand where he's coming from .  By then it will be too late for the affected owners to move to another insurer.  let's wait and see.

I wouldn't consider a company that wasn't for life after having a dog with an ongoing illness when I was young :(

And on the morbid side they were the only ones who I could see that insured against the death of your pet due to illness before it's 11th birthday. The others covered accidental death but not illness. Not sure how it would be if you had to have dog pts due to suffering but I hope I never have to find out :(

I wouldn't consider a plan not for life either, but my experience with DBI taught me that they can change the rules at any time and there's not a lot you can do about it, it seems!  I did take DBI to issue over it, but got absolutley nowhere.

Ive gone with direct line, I didnt see anything in the small print about a % excess just £35 or something like that.

Claire - who is now going to go home and read the small print again

I'm with Scottish Pet Insurance, cover for life, £5000 per condition, no loading with age & £40 excess payable once per condition. I was previously with Pet Plan but found them expensive in comparion. I have made a few claims now with no problem at all. :)

Details here for anyone interested.

I think Direct line got stroked off my short list because they only covered each illness for the first year ... but don't quote me on that ;)

My excess with pet plan is £60 for vet fees which increases after the age of 7. Don't know much about insurance so I can't say if this is good or bad. Policy was taken out in November
