Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Risk of Pregnancy 1st Season?
- By Guest [gb] Date 03.12.03 18:31 UTC
Can a bitch puppy be made pregnant by her companion entire adult male during her first Season? (when obviously she could be as young as 6 months)!

If so, would it be wise to have the male neutered?  Or could they remain in the same house but kept apart?

Just out of interest what is the ideal age for a female to conceive for the first time?

Thank you for your time and experience.

Yes, a bitch can (and many are allowed to :( ) become pregnant at her first season.

It is possible to keep an entire bitch and dog in the same house during seasons, but people who do it say that it's a nightmare for everybody. The dog often howls continually and refuses to eat for several days, and allpeople in the house must make sure that the two are never in the same room together. Most people kennel one of them for the duration.

Generally, depending on breed, the ideal age for a bitch's first litter is after her second birthday (usually her 4th season).

Hope this helps.

Yes a bitch can become pregnant on her first season.
And no you do not want this to happen yet.
An ideal time for a bitch to have puppies is after her second birthday.
When she is a year old or over you have the K.C.  BVA tests done.
Depending on what breed, hip scoring, eye testing and heart testing.
She should be kennel club registered and if you are not experienced
which to be asking this question I would say you are inexperienced you need
the help of a good breeder with your breed of dog.
Because in some breeds the pedigree may look good on paper, but you dont want to double up on genetics on some breeds to produce eye conditions or bad temperaments.  So someone experienced is a huge help. Maybe you could join your breed club for your dog and then when the bitch is old enough you could talk to someone in the club and they would advise you.
If the person that bred your dog is an experienced breeder you can go back to them for advice.
Having a bitch spayed at 6 months is rather young, as they do need to mature before being spayed. But speak to your vet.
You can separate your dog but it is quite difficult as they do pine so. You cant walk them together either so it makes a lot of hard work.
Talk to your vet for advice.
