Topic Dog Boards / General / Another Q re poo commands...

Ok I've picked my word, and am going to give clicker training a go but I've a bit of a daft question...

When I catch her weeing/pooing in an inappropriate place, ie my floor, how should I handle it? Is it a 'no' or is it a poo command?

I'm going to read up but thought cd might be quicker since she now arrives on SATURDAY!!!! :D :D :D

Well, people have different methods, but i make a loud noise to distract the puppy, and run to the door encouraging the pup to follow, when the pup releaves outside, say the command, and praize.

Good luck with your little girl!

EDITED to say- do not tell her off if you see her soiling inside. This will only make her think that sometimes you are pleased, other times you are anrgy. Thus she will learn to "go" when you are not in her presence. This will not only stop her from wanting to toilet outside when you wish her to, but it may also make her do her messes somewhere where you are un albe to find it, such as behind the back of the door as she does not want to get told off!

When i caught my girl i just said out and chased her out the door and waited till she finished outside praising her to heaven saying "Wee wee, good girl".
But bear in mind it was warm weather then so have your coat/hat/gloves/umbrella/wellies at the ready ;)

edit to say, actually i think i clapped my hands and no then out.

I'm going to freeze aren't I?

So I wait till she's outside then click, command, praise? Or is it command, click, praise? lol - I'm learning more than the dog ever will ;)

I actually think the clicker won't work on housetraining because it will be frozen solid :p

Once you've got her 'conditioned' to recognise the clicker you start off by using the clicker to 'mark' the wanted behaviour - this should happen while she's still performing.  There are different ways of using the clicker - some folk using 'shaping' which means not saying anything, just clicking and rewarding the minute the dog does something close to what you want, and then clicking only when they modify the behaviour to closer to what you want.  If you take toilet training as an example you'd click when she started to sniff the ground to start with, then when she lowers her back end (clicking each type of movement several times before moving on to the next stage) and when the toilet training is going well you can start to introduce a 'command' word - I use 'be good girls!' - while the dog is actually performing.  Eventually the command will come before the performance..........
Alternatively you can condition her to the clicker as before, then click the full performance, and use the 'command' word as part of the verbal praise - for example 'click' 'be good girl, what a clever be good girl!' (you feel like a bit of a twit - but it comes with the territory <G>) As before, eventually the command moves forward in the sequence....

Think the second way sounds simplest for the whole family to stick too (although I'll be doing 90% of it  )

Should I 'condition' her first - click, treat, praise - until she gets the hang of click = treat = good or should it be from the start when she does anything right I use the clicker?

Sorry for the questions but the book that came with the clicker only really tells you how to do a sit then says apply same principles
