Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How wil I know if my dog is pregnant?
- By ClareJZ [gb] Date 03.12.03 16:08 UTC
We have 2 labradors, dog (18months) and bitch (8months).  The vet said he would not neuter her until she was at least 9 months old.  She has just come into her first season and the dog has shown no interest up until now, however, this morning I caught him trying it on and now I'm worried that whilst i'm at work, he'll be up to no good!  We cant separate them as he would suffer separation anxiety from her with no one else in the house with him.  Is there anyway i can tell that he has done the deed, and what signs should i look for if she is pregant.  HELP!!!!!!!

Would a dog gate not work, so they can see eachother, but they are in seperate rooms?

I wish it would - but we've tried that even when we're in the house, and he whined the whole time.  Left on his own i'd hate to think what he'd do to the room

Get her down to the vet within the next 36hours(I think) and get a misalign injection Morning after pill for dogs. Better than putting a pup through pregnancy.
Could you get a gate, although, even with a gate, a lab could jump it if it was getting frisky. IUs there anyway of taking one to work with you??? Or getting somone in to dog sit???????

There's no way you can leave them alone. Can you crate both of them? Can one go into kennels? Can one stay with friends?

Put one or the other into kennels, there is no way you can leave them together whilst you are out you may well come home and find one or both of them injured. Can you take time off work? But even then you will have to keep them apart.

I know how difficult it is owning a stud dog and bitches. But
keeping them apart is all part of being responsible and not letting
puppies be bred with. Most breeds are not bred until 2 years of
age because of many reasons. Puppies that are put in pup can
die.  Also at 8 months she cant of had any K.C health tests such
as hip scoring.  Their are many reasons to keep them apart at this
stage.  If you decide at a later date that you want to breed your
girl then do it then. As you can get her health tested and she will
be mature.
I would buy a house cage a large one and put your puppy in it.
She can not get out and she can lay in the same room as your dog.
However....the best course of action is to completely separate
your dog from your bitch.
It is difficult and I do understand how difficult it is. But you dont want
your puppy having pups.
I hope all works out ok for you.
