Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Advice about Dobermanns
- By Guest [gb] Date 03.12.03 10:05 UTC
When looking for a Dobermann Puppy - Are there any health problems that should be checked regarding the Sire and Dam?  i.e. hip displacia, elbow problems, heamapholia (as in gsds), eyes problems etc... as in other breeds.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi Guest

Dobermanns suffer from many problems just like other breeds (and humans)  :(   In my opinion they should be hip scored (our breed average is 10), eye tested for PHPV, and be DNA tested for von Willebrands Disease - a bleeding disorder.  One parent at least should be clear as this means that no affected puppies should be born, if two carriers or carrier and affected are mated together then more affected pups can be produced.  This year saw the start of an official Dobermann Breed Council/Kennel Club scheme for the latter, the former two already have BVA/KC schemes.
