On a recent visit to London, my husband and I took ourselves to Harrods to do some window shopping and browsing. We went to the 'Pet' dept to see the crazy jewelled stuff that rich folks buy for their dogs. I was horrified to see Mini Smooth Dachs puppies for sale. Who sells their puppies to Harrods? It makes my blood boil.

When I went to Harrods a few years ago they were selling springer spaniel puppies, although these were not young puppies they looked a good 4 months old, kept in a perspex pen probably since they were 8weeks old or less :(   I bet they sell them for twice the price a breeder would too and these pups would probably have no social skills at all :(

I remember going there as a kid and they sold monkeys then too.

There should be a law against selling any pet from a pet shop.

I know what you mean. I went a while ago a couple of times and they had yorkies and all sorts. The dogs looked terrified and had hundreds of people looming all over them. What kind of a start in life is that!?!

Ther was a piece in the papers about ayear ago about Harrods needing to sign up some new breeders.  Said their Vet went out to prospective premises and fully checked them out!  They seem to think bec asue they have an in house Vet it is OK from them to sell live animals, and insist that their are all frightfully well bred!  When I was in the Pet Dept in October I was pleased to see no pups, but an very lonely little British Blue Kitten.  At least they do act on the licencing requiremnt from keeping the animals away from the public at certain times - often when you go into the Dept. the door to the live animal room is locked and anotice saying they need some quiet time is displayed.  I still cant understand why whenever the RSPCA etc campaigns for another animal welfare bill ammendment they dont call for the banning on sales of puppies and kittens in shops.

Dogs Today did an article a while back about Harrods selling puppies........

I think the conclusion they came to was that whilst its not ideal, if you MUST buy a pup from a petshop, then they do at least do it in a more ethical manner than most.

Not condoning the sale of live animals in shops, i think the law should be changed to stop it.....but i believe that the pups ARE KC reg, and are physically healthy. The mental state of them is a different matter.

I was in Harrods in the 80s they had a litter of westies. I enquired to the price as i knew something about the cost of a westie only to be given a nearly double figure. I was then asked if i wanted to see the pedigree but they never mentioned kc reg which i found a bit strange.

If Harrods must sell puppies must they charge the earth for them. Not that I agree to them selling puppies at all no matter what the breed
