Topic Dog Boards / Health / Should I feed him?
- By lorna [gb] Date 02.12.03 18:14 UTC
Please could someone advise me as to whether I should feed my 14 week old OES puppy who has been vomiting and has a bad case of diahorrea this evening?  I wouldn't feed an adult dog for 24hrs, but I can't remember what to do with puppies as they obviously need to be fed more often.  I am just giving him boiled water at the moment.  This only started this afternoon, so he has only just missed one of his usual four meals. I think he may have eaten something in the garden, but can't be sure.  He isn't particularly lethargic or ill in other ways, though a bit more restrained than his usual bouncy self. Can anyone also suggest if I can give him anything to help please? Thanks. Lorna

Hi There
Starve him for 24 hrs then just feed boiled white fish and rice or pasta see if this clears it up. Try this for a couple of days if no change then take him to the vets he may need some anti biotics to clear it up. He has probably just picked up a bug.
I will say though if he becomes lethargic then take him straight to the vets.

Thanks for the swift response.  I'll try what you say and keep a very close eye on him.  We were at puppy training class last night so he could have picked up a bug there I suppose - he is the youngest by several months so more susceptible I'd guess.

Hi Lorna
Try giving him natural bio-yoghurt as well - works wonders - puts the good bacteria back into the gut.

Yes, thanks, I will give it a try.  Poor soul is having trouble with his teething as well, so as he is hungry, he is eating me!!!!

Hi Lorna,
Your puppy is still quite young, so I personally wouldn't starve him for too long - just cut back on his meals for a bit, and the quantity, and just use those easily digested foods that have been mentioned.  I'm sure he will be fine in no time.

Thank you. Its always difficult to know with a puppy isn't it.  He is giving me those big, soft brown, sad puppydog eyes, that make me feel guilty for not feeding him.  At least he is hungry so he can't be too poorly.
