probably a silly question but i've not had to use it before, ijust cut Sam's claw to much and it bled quite a bit so i rushed out to the local pet shop and got some styptic powder but when we opened it it was a solid block, is this normal or do you think i should take it back, there was a tiny bit at the bottom of the tube just enough to stop Sams bleeding, i don't think he'll be to keen on me doing them next time though

Don't know about the styptic, but make sure he doesn't get dirt in the injured claw.  He could contract tetanus, which is fatal if not treated.  Our dog was spayed and I let her out in the back yard.  She got dirt on her incision and got tetanus.  We took her to 3 vets, 3 days in a row, before it was diagnosed. She almost died.  Take care.

If you press on the toe (foot) above the cut claw this can often slow down the bleeding enough for it to clot - then keep your dog quiet so he does not immediately rub the scab off
