Topic Dog Boards / Health / boxer puppy with tetanus

my 9 week old boxer puppy has just been diagnosed with tetanus. She is currently in a critical condition at the vets. All her limbs and face have gone into spasm so she is totally paralysed. The problem started a few days after I got her. She got a little nick at the end of her docked tail which was treated with antibiotics from the vets. I noticed she seemed a bit quiet the last couple of days but was eating & drinking ok so I was not too concerned but then this morning when I got up I picked her up and she seemed rigid. I took her straight to the vets who have since started to administer the antitoxin serum but things are really touch and go at the moment. I've been looking on the internet all day but can't find too much info on uk websites. Has anybody got any stories of dogs in this country being treated for tetanus?

Sorry your pup is so ill. I've no experience of tetanus, but apparently it is uncommon in dogs, and complete recovery may take over a month, with various drugs needed to counteract the toxin and control muscle spasms.
Hope she makes a recovery. Good luck.

Hi,
We are in the same boat at this time.  Our one yr old, Sara, was recovering from being spayed, and contracted tetanus from laying in the back yard.  She also is in 24 hr care.  She can walk, but can't eat or drink.  It's her 5th day in treatment, so we are hoping for improvement soon.
This story gave me hope.  Best wishes,  Ann

Update on Sara- She started eating this morning without choking, and she is now home.  Hang in there.  Best of luck to you and your boxer,   Ann
