Topic Dog Boards / General / What breed do i choose?
- By bulldogowner [gb] Date 01.12.03 13:13 UTC
I lost Sevi (Deerhound) last week, and me and Paige have missed having her around.

I have promised Paige another dog but sometime in Febuary (just to get xmas out the way), I would take a rescue providing it was not an older dog.
I would prefer to have a puppy, i have ruled out having another Bulldog as our house is ruled by them
I would like a large dog, i love danes but have read through some of the posts on here and the sound an absolute nightmare, but it dont stop me loving them :D
I love Bloodhounds (infact i love all dogs in the hound group), i love all the bull breeds to but know some dont mix well with others.
Any comments on larger breeds would be greatly appreciated.

They look like nice dogs :)
Dont know an awful lot about them though, my passion being bullies.

If you have more info on them, i would like to know more.

Dean you have most of my ideal dogs already in your house - the only ones you missed out on were the Dane and the Irish Wolfhound.

Since it looks like I'll be getting the dane this week I'll keep you up to date on how we get on. I'm sure a man of your experience and patience would be able to handle anythig they can throw at you :)

Get a dane get a dane ;)
Sorry i'm VERY biased, my daughter is 4yrs old and disabled and they are as thick as theives sometimes. (They aren't called gentle giants for nothing!!)
I have a fawn bitch and i will NEVER get another breed they are so loving, adore being in your company.
Oh god i could go on...
I have no problems at all apart from chewing but that's my fault when i go out i sometimes have a 'senior moment' and forget to lock her up.

edit to say...Our breeder has british(i think) bulldogs too and they all got on fab.

I love Huge dogs, and i like Danes the chewing up wouldnt be a problem, i have an RR thats chewed through almost everything we had in the house at some stage in his life, he used to do it even when you were watching him he would be like "oo your not watching me i think ill have a sly chew on this cos your paying me no attention....lol"
He has grown out of it to an extent, but hes chewed through sofas, beds, duvets, ripped up stair carpet, Roz even managed to pull up some of the tiles that were fixed to the kitchen floor..the list is endless...so i think i could handle a Dane :D

If you like short hair breeds- why not look at the GSMD?- 25-28", coat stiff and short, not dog-aggressive, like children...

There is also the Vizsla?

Hi Get a Dane, you wont regret it,i home check for a breed rescue and they have lots of lovely Danes waiting for new homes.
My Danes have never been a nightmare, apart from the usual puppy phases, they are very loving and so full of character, and they soon become your best friend.
My Danes have lived quite happily with our other dogs and cats.
Good luck with your search
Steff.

If I were you I'd go dane. I've got to know two in the last year and they are both fantastic animals one dog and a bitch they are two of the nicest natured dogs I've ever meet. They are walked regularly by a man and his daughter who's about 6. to see this little girl walking between the two danes makes me smile every time.

I know of some lovely deerhound X babies that are desperate for new homes - they were rescued from a horse auction - being sold out of a box very early on. Let me know if you would like details :)

Surprised no-one has suggested a Ridgeback?  If you like the Danes looks, hounds and a shortcoated bigger breed, could be what you're looking for?
- By bulldogowner [gb] Date 01.12.03 15:58 UTC
Hello

I already have a Ridgeback "Roz" i have mentioned him in a earlier post on this thread..lol, still love him to bits though:D

Hi Dean, what kind of dog does Paige fancy?
- By bulldogowner [gb] Date 01.12.03 17:21 UTC
Hello

I have had her up here with me looking at pictures of different breeds on the champdogs index, and so far she has said she likes Standard Poodles (not my cup of tea though) and Pyrenean Mountain Dog, and she also so likes Bloodhounds...so theres a bit of a difference there...lol.

It's got to be a Spanish Water Dog then.  Looks like a Poodle but without the daft hairstyle and if you can't cope with the long coat you just clip it off all the same length all over:d
- By Lorelei [gb] Date 02.12.03 10:31 UTC
Aha so shes a large dog girl too :D wonder where this comes from? Bloodhounds are great with kids and they are hounds like RRs ..... mind you youd never get peace out on a walk with one :D
- By Lily Munster [gb] Date 01.12.03 17:44 UTC
OOOppppsss...teach me to read things properly!
- By bulldogowner [gb] Date 01.12.03 17:59 UTC
Anyone is more than welcome to borrow "Roz" by the way :D :D if they ever think of owning a Ridgeback :D hes a nightmare at times, but so loveable.

RR's are hubby's favourite but he's letting me have my pick for now :D

I was going to point out the Dean/Dane thing to ;)  and I'm fast becomming a believer in fate when it comes to dogs :)
- By bulldogowner [gb] Date 01.12.03 19:05 UTC
Tell your hubby he can have Roz, hed be back here within a day :D

It's unlikely to be a pup through breed rescue :(  They are very few and far between - why not an older dog? :)  Loads of them needing homes! :D
- By sandaharr [gb] Date 01.12.03 19:04 UTC
Dean, have you ever considered a boerboel,we are dealing with kennel club just now to get them on the import register, sandra.
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 01.12.03 21:00 UTC
What about a Boxer??
OK so they aren't huge but you could have a lot of fun, they are great with kids,
they are a 'bullbreed' and well if you 'love' hooligans they would make a great addition
to your family :D They get on well with most breeds if they are socialised with them, it's just some
breeds take a dislike to the Boxer face.
Or there's Dogue De Bordeaux, but they are similar sized to the Bullmastiff.
The Bullmastiff is a breed I love, I'm seriously tempted!! :D
Spinone's are hairy long nosed versions of the Boxer, they have the same mischevious
nature.
Hmmmmmmm decisions decisions and I'm glad it's not my decision. I'd want too many dogs :D
- By bailliesmum [gb] Date 01.12.03 22:24 UTC
Dean, I have to agree with the Dane theory... :D   Diesel is just the most lovable chump ever :)  We've only had him for 8 weeks but it feels like he's been here forever....oh and to cap it all off....he's gorgeous too :) :)
