Help

When I thought I was getting a staffy I bought a small crate for her and had intended to crate train her... no hope my dane is going to fit in that
Do any of you dane owners crate them or just give them beds? Would I need to get 3 sizes so she can upgrade or just go for the huge one (saw one today for £200

) and try blocking it off?
It was really for house training that I wanted it - once she doesn't 'go' indoors she can have the run of the house with a decent sized bed as 'her place'.
Any other hints and tips for the first time Dan owner would be good :D

Both of mine used crates. Phoebe took to hers straightaway, Willis needed more "persuading". I got one over four foot in size from Ebay, but both dogs outgrew what I perceive to be comfortable...and now the house rabbit lives in it.
Both were housetrained without a crate as they didn't start using crates till 4 months old :)

<<<over four foot in size >>> I've had smaller bedrooms ;)
She'll rarely be left alone but are they generally destructive pups or content to sleep for an hour while you nip to school etc? I have a 6' square hallway that has an undertairs 'cupboard' big enough for the biggest plastic dog beds (been measuring). There's a radiator and we've draft-proofed the front door so it's a cosy place. Do you think she'd be happy there? Of course she can follow me round the house the rest of the time.
I'm moving all small plastic toys upstairs and have rearranged the furniture so the christmas tree won't be in easy reach for her :D
Every time I stop for a cuppa today I'm reading 'The Perfect Puppy' or on here searching for threads about Danes to see what I can learn. Read a great book about the breed last night that went into lots of detail about illnesses etc so I'll be looking out for the smallest sign
Think I'm pretty prepared (apart from the bed/crate) just with it all falling into place so quickly (and easily) I'm having a few panic moments when I wander if I'm up to it :)

I wouldn't say they are any more destructive than any other breed when teething, but the damage is relative to size. We came home last thursday after being out for a couple of hours and Phoebe had fetched off the wallpaper in the hall, ripped up the carpet, opened up the post and eaten £25 and got hold of a loo roll and had a good play with it. She has to go in the hall when out because we are redecorating and recarpeting it, and so its the right place for her whilse she's in this mood :)

My wallpaper/stair carpet/shoes! anything that is around she will have and that's only been done in the 20mins i've gone to school!!
I often 'mistakenly' think she can be trusted to be loose in the house..Otherwise she has restricted areas.
I don't use a crate and to be honest i didn't even think about!! (Never even thought to do research). :(
But i put her in the kitchen with a safety gate instead of shutting the door. Now she has progressed to all the house but every door is shut so she has the hall, kitchen, spare bedroom where she looks out the window to her hearts content (nosey boogers).
Congratulations they are a wonderful breed and i'll never have another breed EVER !!
p.s Make sure you allow yourself 10mins before the school run to move every chewable object :D

Oh p.s Our girl has 2 single duvets folded in half as beds (but she hardly uses them, prefers my bed and the settee) and nobody has sat on the settee for 6months. ;)
Please send me an email with a picture when you get her!!! :D :D :D :D

Hi Wishfairy - Congratulations :) You must be so excited.
What colour are you getting? Bitch or Dog? Puppy or Rescue?
You have to send us all piccies when you get your dane home. Diesel is so affectionate, see he;s making me type all this wrong, becuase he's up for another cuddle ;) :D
I thought Baillie, my retriever was loving - but he ain't got nothing on Diesel, he wants affection constantly :) he follows me around the house constantly, he snores and farts loudly when he's asleep :D - but I wouldn't be without him :)
Good Luck

She's a fawn Bitch from the Arondyke kennels - anyone know of them?
Had a bit of a setback today - my old girl might have kennel cough which will severely upset all my plans :(
I can't seem to get a hold of the breeder either - neither of the phone numbers I have works.

I don't know them but i did look at their website when i was researching, Ooh a fawn bitch just like me!!
I'm sorry about your other dog is she ok? Was it kennel cough?

:( She's being treated for it anyway just in case :(
Didn't cough all night and only a dry 'mumble' this morning without the horrible 'hacking'. She's a strong girl so I'm not too worried about her , it's just a bit risky bringing in the pup and the breeder hasn't got back to me yet :(

:(
Where are you getting yours from and when? Everyone I've told has said something along the lines of 'Do you know how big they get?'... lol nah I just thought the pups were cute ;)

sorry - that should have read 'Where did you get her from and how old is she?' :o

Do you realise you will have to give up your settee?? Do you realise that when you walk it everyone says "look at that horse"! Do you also realise they have smelly farts!! (Actually that sounds too nice they have smelly farts of atomic bomb proportions) :D :D :D
By bailliesmum
Date 03.12.03 14:10 UTC
Hiya - I'll second the farting bit :D Diesel has cleared out the room on several occassions

Hey but now I know that he's okay, he can go on farting forever and it won't worry me :)
Wishfairy, I'm the same as Sarah when I was researching the breed, I emailed Arondyke but she didn't breed blues - Hope your other dog is feeling better soon :)

So glad to hear Deisel is okay - it was the first thing I checked when I got in tonight :) Been any christmas shopping finished off so I don't have to leave her on her own at all for the next couple of weeks :D

Atomic farts  I'll get extra air freshener :)
Funnily enough I'd always wanted a blue but I've been advised that a fawn would maybe be a little calmer for my first Dane :)
Have any of you got puppy photo's? Told the kids tonight and they want to know how big she will be when she arrives (8 weeks)
By mygirl
Date 03.12.03 17:03 UTC
Hi wishfairy i haven't got any puppy photos on the pc, but if you search for G.dane 8 weeks you will find loads. As breeders often show pics at several stages of their stud/bitch lives.
My girl is fawn and if she was anymore laid back she'd be in a coma :D
Glad diesel is ok, but i never see the health boards Sharon, so had to go look!!
