Has anyone had the misfortune of dealing with Mastitis in 'there' kernnel? I need to know how you confronted it.

I dont breed dogs, but when I rescued Ruby she had had pups and she had mastitis. Vets treat it with strong antibiotics :)

normally antibiotic's, hot flannel,s and the strongest pup feeding on the infected nipple do the trick!

My bitch with this litter had mastitis for a couple of feeds - hot flannel on the affected area with plenty of massage to help with the flow, then keep putting the pups on the affected teat to drain it ------- she had it over night so I was up for every feed but she was fine from mid morning onwards.  It just depends on how early you catch it take her to the vet and let him judge, I treated at home simply because it was during the night and early on with the mastitis it had developed between feeds.

Agree with Schip: hot flannel if you catch it early enough - the bitch seems to love it & it seems to bring real relief.

ive just joined the site today, and i went through the pages thats where i read about mastites, ive got a 14 month old GWP she just got over it, she came into season for the first time in august and about 2 month later she developted a phantom pregnancy, wich turned into mastites, she is also loosing all her coat at the moment, she looks in very sorry state, the vet took some skin scrapping of her but it came back clear, so we are leaving it untill end of january,thats when she is going to get spayed, were hoping that is has to do with hormones. im heidi i live in north wales, not used to this site yet, but im sure i will soon get to know it take care heidi

Hi Raphael, don't want to alarm you but mastitis can be a very nasty infection & even life threatening in very severe cases (this is rare, but can happen). It is important to monitor any bitch carefully for signs of mastitis & if it's caught early, this is beneficial. (although, even if it's noticed in the early stages, it can still become very nasty)
Treatment will usually be, (depending on the severity) hot flannels (as hot as your hand can stand) this will help to get the milk flowing, & is soothing. Also raw cabbage leaves placed directly onto the mammaries, - strange I know, & I laughed when I first heard it, but I don't think it's an old wives tale, I think it really helps (& anything is worth a go)- some natural ingredient in the cabbage helps. Also antibiotics & sometimes painkillers & or anti-inflams.
Quite often if the pups are put on the teats for a good feed, that'll settle the mammaries down & they were probably just very full, but if not the most important thing is to contact the vet as early as possible if mastitis is suspected.
Another sign of mastitis is a high temperature.
