Has anyone any idea why my 20 month old bitch's 2nd season has lasted almost 4 weeks? The blood stopped a while ago, but her vulva is still swollen

Ta!

Paula

PS Has anyone got dogs who are more trouble than mine????:D

It does not sound out of the norm to me, what do others think. JH

Spoke to the vet today - the other one has just come home after her op (see my other message!)- she said leave it another week and if there's no change to take her in so she can have a look. So that's what I'll do!:D. Aaaaagh - more money!!!!!

The swelling can go on for quite a long time after the discharge finishes. To tell the truth I really couldn’t tell you just how long it takes, I've never really noticed. Once the discharge has finished you can start thinking of getting back to normal.

I also think your fine but if you are worried go to vet for swab just to relieve your mind mari

One of my bitches remains a little swollen (and soft) until the time she would have whelped if she had been mated

Ditto....I've had all of the above.
But like Mari said, you can easily have your vet take a swab if you are still concerned.
I once read somewhere, that if the vulva stayed swollen but, like an arrow pointed "down" (opposed to pointing "up" towards her navel) that it meant she was pregnant. I asked one of my vets about it and she sort of shrugged her shoulders and slightly 'rolled her eyes' at my question, and told me she could run a pregnancy test if I'd like. Well, at the time, I didn't have any of my westies in heat or pregnant. But I have since noticed that the vulva does stay swollen and it does point "down" when pregnant. Has anyone else ever heard this or noticed it?

.Bee I have to say that is what happens to mine as well , but it happened with Alice as well not too long ago and no pups , but then again thats Alice and as the song goes who the!!!! IS ALICE:d

:D :D :D Mari, I have an Alice too. But about your Alice, had you mated her or had she been in season with no mating?
Because, I did have a similar thing happen with a 15 mos.female westie returned last Sept by a friend of mine. As you know, and I should have known -- never let a 'friend' have a puppy; its one of those Rules, under 'friends/relatives' along with, never loan money or give a job to.
Anyway, when she returned Daffney, she was swollen and her vulva pointed "down". So I asked my friend if she had been in heat. Well...she thought she "might" have been in heat, around the end of July. (this was now the first of Sept) I asked if Daffney had been around any male dogs. "Oh"...she said, "Just my 2yr old male (intact) boxer in the back yard. But...he is alot taller and bigger than Daffney. And, "Oh yeah... there were a few times, she was left in the house with my 1yr old male (intact) rat terrier. But...he is alot shorter and smaller than Daffney" Jeeeeeeezzzzz
So, I thought for sure, with the vulva still swollen and pointing "down" along with being left alone with these two boys the entire time she was in heat, that she was undoubtedly pregnant. But like Alice---No pups.

Thank God for that!
You're totally right about never giving/selling a pup to a relative.
My mother-in-law wanted one out of a litter put the deposit down then called up last minute and said she couldn't handle another dog and sorry, she needed her deposit back. Glad it ended there and I didn't have to get those annoying phone calls about puppy stuff from her.

Sorry bee did not see post untill now I did mate Alice and should be nursing a litter of bullmastiffs as we speak , but it wasent meant to be . thats my motto,
And Alice's too ;) :) :D

Great motto Mari, (and Alice). After the "coast was clear" I had Daffney
spayed. Since none of my Westies are confined (except to my property), I didn't want to take a chance of a future mating, since the only intact
male on the premises is Daffney's father. It's only been 3 months, but so far she hasn't had a problem with incontinence (getting back to the original subject of this thread). Thanks for answering. :)

Thanks, everyone, but can I take her out? Poor girl is climbing the walls (me too :D). Think I will take her for a swab this week just to be on the safe side. By the way - she is definitely NOT pregnant - I've watched her like a hawk and we've had no probs with any stray dogs hanging around or any of the neighbours dogs jumping over fences and my other goldie is another bitch.

I suppose it could be the immaculate conception - how long is it until Christmas!!!:D :D :D
