does anyone else here absolutly adore great danes?
In the last five years or so i've been growing fonder and fonder, i love all breeds but you just have to have a favourite and these are mine!!
i've read loads about them but just don't have the time for one at the moment although i'm desperate to bring one into the family!! so are they as fantastic to live with as they are to watch and read about?? someone let me know of there lived experience?? my dream is to own a dane and a border terrier (yes a bit different i know but as my login name suggests i am barking mad!!!) would these two breeds make good companions, i need to know before i to hung up on the idea!! thanks in advance, looking forward to your response!!

Hi 'Barking Mad'

We are the 'manicmutz'. YES we adoregiant breeds as well as smaller average sized ones, and have recently bought our first! (along with our saint bernard!) She's a blue, called Summer, is 7 months old, and you can if you want view our web page and album at where there are photos of all the manicmutz including summer.

Great danes are my husbands favourite breed, and we find that they are hilarious dogs to live with. Summer has a great personality and is a real clown sometimes. I subscribe to the great dane forum, if you want I can let you have the link, if you aren't a member already.

We also find that they are adaptable with living with other dogs, she lives with 9 others ranging from a chihauha to Saint bernard!

My husband and I would love to have a great dane, but I heard that the great dane does not live very long, is this true?

unfortunately danes do not live as long as smaller breeds, average is about 7-9 years. this wouldn't put me off though, they seem to be such a fantastic breed, the strong agile look of a guard dog but actually just big softies when you get to know them, great family pets i hear. they may have a shorter lifespan, but i give that time to a dane over another breed any day!!

Take a look at www.danes.org.co.uk the web site for for the Great Dane Adoption Society. I'm sure they could engage you in all sorts of Dane type activities if you've got any spare time to help out this rescue orginisation!

Friends of mine, a couple with two small girls adopted a Great Dane, from one of the Great Dane adoption societies. The husband had wanted a Great Dane for ages, but they didn't dare with 2 little girls and a large labrador-cross bitch who is a bit funny with other dogs. Then they came across a website page for adopting a Great Dane. They applied to adopt and were vetted by the society and put on a waiting list for the right type of dog. After a few weeks they got a phone call, saying a Great Dane dog had just arrived at their Rescue Centre and could they come and have a look at him. It was love at first sight for all concerned and they took him home. He's the biggest softie you've ever seen, and he's such a gentle boy despite his size. He's great with the two little girls. If he gets in the way they just walk underneath him! He has even won over the labrador cross and they play together all the time. It's a real success story! They all love him to bits and wouldn't be without him now.

Hi Barkingmad and everyone,
We have a Great Dane called Maxim, he is almost 9 now, they are the most lovely breed to own. In 1997 our sweet Beatrice died of a heart complaint, she was the sweetest
and most affectionate dane. We rescued her when she was 4/5, having been kept outside in all weathers, when she came to us she was very scared of ceilings, but after a while all her beautiful ways came out and she was a different dog.
she would rest her head on our shoulders as if to say im here for you too, and all great danes owners know how they rest against your legs. We still miss her with all our hearts. At the same time we had Maxim, he is a very large dane, standing over 6ft when up on his back legs. They are wonderful dogs to live with, very calm. It makes me smile to see how they sit on the edge on a sofa. Should anyone be thinking of adopting a Great Dane, Daneline.co.uk have many danes needing to be rescued. If you speak with Sue or Lissi, they can help you.
