hello champdogs i got 4 month old akita and 8 chickens when i put the chickens in the pen in the eveing and let the pup out,he starts eating all the chicken droppings,is this ok or will they cause him any probelms,iclean them off the concrete but not from the grass,any suggestions on how to stop him eating chicken droppings pls.thanks

i think id be worrying more about him eating the chickens   :eek:    im not sure akitas are so good with live stock in general, ----------i cant imagine the droppings doing him any good---[yak]    but he must like them,

I agree with dizzy,it's the chickens you need to worry about.My akitas have killed about a dozen of my pigeons between them,they actually jump up to get them,one even managed to open the aviary and then the chicks holding pen and got the young and the mother,she was sent to coventry for a day for that!!!!:)

When I kept chickens as well as dogs, I remember wondering if I need ever feed any of them again! The dogs would eat the chicken poo, and the chickens would peck through the dog poo :eek: - anever-ending circle ...

The only thing you may need to worry about is if the chickens have eaten any rat poison.  When they plough the fields at harvest time it does disturb the rats/mice and we then have to put poison down.  We did this last year and the gamekeepers chickens came into our garden and ate some of the poison. The chickens then passed it or laid it in the chicken pen and one of her terriers ate the droppings/egg and became very ill.
