Hello! I have a question for someone who knows a lot about dogs. I bought Beau (my dog) a year and 4 months ago. I got her from a newspaper ad and they were selling them for $200-600. I got lucky and only paid $300. She did not come with any papers. So my question is... is she really a full lab? I live in Mexico and it is hard to get her up there for soemone to look at her. This is what she looks like...
SHe is not very big, she weighs probably around 60-70 pounds, she has the short coarse hair, tail kind of goes up, and she points whenever she see's a bird????? Can anybody help off of this info? I cant attach a pic, so please help!

If you know that the only 2 points you mention about your dog are correct what was the point of your post?
to meandbeau, boy you're a nippy sweetie, wouldn't like to see you in a show ring when the judges passes over your dog, lighten up,sandra. :)

Lindsay, labradors certainly are
not meant to point! Their tails aremeant to be straight. The hair of their coat should be about 3.5 - 4 cm long, with a waterproof outer coat and a soft warm undercoat. Have you looked for pictures of labradors on the Net?
Did you see your dog's mother? What did she look like?

I was going to say that when you buy cheap from a paper your not going good quality....what do people expect, maybe to buy a show quality pup with no research and next to no money from an advert...if you want a dog to look like the breed its suppoed to be 1/research 2/save enopugh money to pay the going rate 3/ expect to wait

Have a look
here and
here for pictures. Does your dog resemble these?

Even if this dog started out ok, it was bred from before it was 12 months old so I would doubt it would have by 18 months been able to mature into anything that looks like a well bred well cared for Lab. The owner also complains that the dog is badly behaved and now wants another dog a Chocolate Lab, so guess the poor bitch is never going to get the attention it needs. How you can train a dog that has spent half of her life in whelp or raising pups I don't know. Hope the new dog is not a male!!

Very occasionally a Labrador will point although it is not normal. I guess it's a throwback to something. (Flatcoats will very often go on point!)
The tail should effectivly be a continuation of the top line of the dog. It may curve upward slightly towards the end but should neither be carried too high or too low.
As to buying a trained dog, A lot of people will sell part trained or trained gundogs. You can expect to pay big money for one though! There is a trained Labrador advertised in this weeks Shooting Times for £4000 and a part trained one for £1200
As to taking the dog to training classes, no dog is too old! Labradors are not the easy touch at training that novice owners seem to believe. I keep saying on here that however pretty they may look they are bl**&y hard work!
