Hi, I am curious, I read somewhere about an 'English Pitbull' and I was wondering if someone could tell me what the difference between an English and an American pitbull is? I know there are English Bulldogs, but I've never heard of an English Pit.
Thanks ~~~~

people sometimes call Bull Terriers English Pitbulls...but as far as Im aware..and I would hope I would know such a thing, there is no such thing as an English Pitbull.
American pitbulls however are banned from the uk under the DDA.
Hope this helps.

Hi guest, im sorry to tell you know such breed exists, i heard the same but later found out that it is just a nickname for the irish staffordshire bull terrier. Many people belive irish staffs to be pit bulls and therefore give them this name.

please please please please dont go round telling people that isbt's are or are known as the english pitbull - its complete rubbish made up by people without the brains or the responsibility to own a doggy bag let alone a dog.
that is nothing more than rubbish spouted by baseball cap wearing morons who need an animal with a reputation to attempt to look hard.
sorry if thats a bit rant ish but this is something that really riles me

The irish stafforshire bull terrier has a similar look to an American pit bull but is not illegal to own... yet.
If people keep making the (wrong) connection then there's a chance this beautiful, friendly dog will meet the same fate as the pit :(

unfortunately its pitbulls and pitbull types that are illegal (aswell as the other breeds) and so even if you have a dog that is a cross breed or an Irish staff etc it can be seized and you can be prosecuted if it is seen to be pitt type

But what counts as 'type' and who makes these decisions?
I've been fairly lucky with my bitch who could be seen as 'pit bull type' - the vets said that a boxer cross would be the safest thing to register her as, so on all her paperwork that's what she is :)
She could be irish staff cross or even staffi cross  but a more gentle and caring dog I've yet to find. I'd trust her to look after a newborn moreso than I would a lot of people! (but please don't jump on me about leaving dogs and kids unattended as I'm a good mummy and have always managed without making the dog babysit;) )

the problem is it seems to be random (and thankfully now less common). But one thing is for sure once the dog is picked up under the DDA it is very hard to prove it is not of Pitbull type.Sadly there have been some wonderful family pets who have been destroyed or spent many years under lock and key because of their looks

there is currently a breeding program underway with a dog which they are calling a mastaff and is carrying the name the english pitbull.
they are already to a certain extent coverered by the dda and ownership is very carefully vetted and all dogs must be registered at your local police station.
think you can read up on them at www.mastaff.co.uk.

Thought they had stopped all police registration as there should no longer be any dogs that are on the DDA list still in the country. More detail please Andy, is this a new act or has this crossbreed been put on the DDA list and if so when. Or may be you are talking from somewhere other than the UK ;)

Hello
A mastaff is a Staffordshire Bull terrier x Bullmastiff/Mastiff - there is no pit bull in them, perfectly legal, refered to by some as the "English Pit"
Try and keep Irish Staffs out of this, they have nothing to do with the breeding programs of these dogs.

my intention was to keep the isbt out of it - the initial post was enquiring about a dog known as an english pitbull and the only place ive actually seen anything go by that name was on the mastaff site. I am aware that it has no pitt in it but they are trying to give it that name - not me!
im not up on things enough to say how or why they are covered by the dda - merely repeating what i read on their website - go have a look.

Your right Jackie...after the initial offer to register the dogs under the DDA these breeds became illegal...full stop. You CANNOT register these breeds or types with anyone in authority and if you go to a police station saying' I have a pitt and want to register it' the only course of action will be that your dog will be seized and a destruction order sought as well as you being prosecuted...

Sorry Andy, i wasnt totally sure i have to say, i just thought i heard someone say once the english pit bull was a nickname given to the isbt. i stand corrected and dont worry, i am totally aware what a fantastic dog the isbt is and certainly dont want to see it have the same fate as the pit bull, again in my opinion the pit bull is a very misunderstood dog, i think its a real shame that a dog that provided is brought up correctly makes a fabulous pet can be branded as nothing but a monster, its such a shame when actually their probably nice dogs. = (
