Hi Guest
Hair loss is v common in dogs sufffering from underactive thyroid problems - presumably your friend's vet has tested this dog to confirm that it is a thyroid problem as hair loss is also a symptom of other conditions eg Cushing's Disease. If the dog does indeed suffer from an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), then the normal treatment is to orally dose with a drug called Soloxine usually for the rest of the dog's life. Once the dog is on Soloxine, the hair will grow back but it won't be immediate & can take several months. If there is no regrowth after a few months, then your friend should go back to his vet - maybe the drug dosage needs adjusting or maybe further tests are needed.

Something your friend may wish to try is evening primrose oil. Not a cure for the thyroid problem, but my parents give their westie epo tablets when his fur gets a bit thin, & it always works.
