Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Mistake???

I posted a question yesterday or day before about my pup Oliver (lab) nipping, well last night I read in a book that squiting a water gun can sometimes help with this after saying NO -
Well I tried this this afternoon, the nipping has stopped but he seems very wary of me, could I have lost his trust, I feel really cruel & horrid
Please please give advice

I tired this as well, but as a "leave it" command to stop Cooper from eating all the plants in the garden. I did a couple of light squirts at his bum and he would immediately stop what he was doing. As he is prone to forget every so often,I just squirt within a few feet of him and he`ll stop again. He now seems to think that when he hears the squirting sound he should stop whatever he is doing. Rather than squirting your pup directly why don`t you try this? (Use a fine mist spray if you can, that way the house won`t get soaked) :-)

No, of course, your pup will not lose trust in you, his dam would have been a good deal rougher with him and I bet he didn't refuse her milk. JH

I hardly think squirting a bit of water is cruel!!!!!
Probably done him a power of good to respect you at last.

Generally speaking a Labrador is outgoing and bold enough to soon bounce back, but a more timid, less bouncy breed could be worried by being squirted in the face with a water pistol. It's the shock/supprise value which has the effect so it is not necessary for your puppy to see you do it. In fact to not see is even better, hence the squirting from behind. That way the correction is not related to you, just something nasty which happens when he does certain things.

Thanks guys-

It really has worked - & and at 7 30 he was as loving as ever and when he went to nip all i said was "No Biting" and he backed off ( I think he was expecting another squirt instead he licked instead ... which I said thats lovely ... good boy..) But if he does it again I'll squirt the back end!!!
My Husband did try it on me on the face .....to see if it would work on me!!! (to stop Nagging!!)

It is the method I use on my 4 elkhounds to curb any undue barking. It works a treat on the kids when they are squabling too!!! :D

Just remember to praise him when he is doing what you want (or not doing something you don't want) <g>
