My friend has a male and female and has no intension of breeding them, he wants to get the male spayed befor she comes into season, for obvious reasons. But the vet where he lives says that she can not be spayed until 6weeks after her season. Stuart is not happy about this as does not want any accidents, and does not want to seperate the dogs for 3 weeks, as this would really depress them. Any ideas.

This would appear to be the norm, our vets won't spay until 2 months after their first season. I can only assume it's to do with them maturing properly.

Sorry, not much help for your friend's problem really.

Hi juliet, change of plan, phoned the vet for him and explaiened about the situation having brother and sister and does not need an accident. The vet said they would spay her as long as the owner was made aware that this can sometimes cause incontinence (sp) in later life. Stuart is all right with this, and his girl is booked in for thursday am.

Hope all goes well on Thursday. We are having ours done Friday 5th December and I'm not looking forward to it, well the 10 days of lead walking after, she will be a nightmare !!!!

She is going in the same day as her best friend so that both of them are out of action during the same period.

Why on earth did they not think of this before buying a male and female, I am getting so cross I will say know more.

I must say I am surprised the vet is going to spay before she has had her first season.

I understand about the incontinance problem, but surley she won't have matured properly, hormones etc.

Bronnie changed so much after her first season, the difference in her was really noticable, she grew up big time.

I'm pro spaying (I do rescue work so see the 1000's of results of accidents) , but would always wait until after the first season. Dogs like humans need time to mature a bit, IMO. I'm sure Stuart won't be OK with incontinence, as it can occur in young life, not just older life. I really would wait and look for sure ways of keeping them apart (including kennelling the male). Misery for 3 weeks is better than pregnancy at her age or spaying too young.

Why not kennel one dog during the duration of the season? The review the situation....

Why not get the male done?
- By Jane [gb] Date 26.11.03 19:04 UTC
Please correct me if i am wrong, but geting the male done will not stop them to mate or tie, but yes no pups. This is the reason for geting his girl done, so no accidents, and yes Jackie he was aware of this when he got sister and brother that he would have to have his girl spayed later on, if she had have come in to season i did tell stuart i would have his boy here so that no accident did happen, but he would like to get her spayed befor hand so they are not seperated for too long, the vet was fine with this. I do know many people that have had dogs spayed befor season. His girl is 1 year old.
I also know sombody that had sister and brother done at the same time, this i personaly wouldnt have done, i have told stuart that i see no reason to get his male done.

Make sure the dogs don't get dirt in the incisions.  We had our dog spayed and let her out in the back yard a few days later.  She contracted tetanus from the soil, and is in intensive care on IV, can't eat or drink.  We don't know if she'll make it.  We weren't warned against the dangers of tetanus.  be careful.  We took her to 3 vets before she was finally diagnosed.  Ann
