Hi My lab puppy has had digestive problems since i got her. When she was wormed with the liquid Drontal she was fine, but Drontal plus mahe her very agitated and hyper. 2 weeks ago she went for tests as she has had constant diarrhoea, and they suspected worms. I told them about the reaction to the Drontal and they gave me sachets of Panacur to give her.She was even worse on these, and after 2 days i didnt give her any more. She even looked different. very nervous, agitated, tail between her legs, pacing up and down constantly and not sleeping. Now I am worried that the test results will show a worm infestation which will have to be treated. I am loathe to give her any more of either of these two wormers, and wonder if there is anything else on the market that would not cause these side effects.

Hi
Drontal and Pancur are the best wormers on the market as far as i know. I always get a reaction from my pups and dogs when they are wormed - they generally look a bit unwell and get the runs for a couple of days - not to mention the face pulling when i squirt the wormer in their mouths!
But I still continue to do it - I dont like doing it but its much better than a worm infestation.
You dont say how old your pup is and what worming it has already had. Early worming is ESSENTIAL for both bitch and pups during pregnancy and the first 8 weeks and then the new owner MUST keep up the regular worming for 6 months and then for the rest of its life... Trust me Worm Burden is much much worse than the effects of the wormer.
Forgot to say - cant you try the drontal liquid again??

Hi She is 20 weeks now,and has been wormed regularly firstly by the breeder, then 2 lots of liquid Drontal at her frist and 2nd injection Then she had the Drontal plus tablet a few weeks later,as apparantly that has something extra which kills tapeworm,so heres hoping that's not what she has.She seems to have a bad reaction to whatever is in the stronger wormers. They were playing a shot in the dark,as they have not had the test results back yet,but to be on the safe side, they gave me the panacur in case worms were causing her digestion problems,as the tests they had done in their own lab were not showing anything untoward. They have sent blood/faecal samples for a more detailed investigation, but seemed to think it could either be worms or a bacterial overgrowth which would need a stronger antibiotic.I just hope she doesn't need any more of the stronger wormers just now. maybe when she is older and her digestion is better, she will be able to tolerate them more.
I have found with Panacur and puppies that you have to weigh the pup and the panacure carefully and do not give any more than they advise. When worming a litter I now weigh each pup individually and give fractionally less (a few drops) than advised as this seems to prevent stomach probems.
I would have thought if your pups tests had been done two weeks ago then they should be back by now (most blood/fecal results are available within hours-10 days). Give your vets a ring to see what the results are.
Constant dire-rear can be due to many things, over feeding (most common in pups), eating damp proof course (I know about this one), eating cat's food, overgrowth of flora in the gut, intolerance to milk, infection.
Please let us know how you get on

The wormers could be unbalancing the flora in the gut... so if no worms then you will need to get her digestive system sorted out. hope all goes well.

Christine. they told me the results would take 10 days, and it is 2 weeks tomorrow since she had them done. I phoned yesterday, and they were still not in. They said they would phone me as soon as they had them. I don't think it's worms, because they advised me to give her Lamb and rice instead of chicken, and her poos have been fine since. Wish I had tried that before I spent £220 ,but at least I will know that there is no serious problem(hopefully).
Thanks for the advice
Jean
