I'll say straight away, I don't believe in free feeding! Is yours a male Akita? They are notorious for being picky eaters, ours was as a young pup. Once I changed him from the diet he was recommended by the breeder (he didn't like it, I didn't like 30 mile round trip to collect it), he was fed 3 times a day. If he didn't eat it in 10 mins it was taken away & he had nothing until his next meal time. Didn't take him long to learn & now he's like my other breed, eats everything put in front of him. Can't be doing with fussy dogs or food hanging around the place! :)

I am not an Akita owner but don't believe in free feeding. Watching dogs eat is a good time to check for problems - ie sore mouth, or problems swallowing, how much they are eating and how keenly, if they are free fed you cannot watch for this little signs.

Apart from this I like to control to some extent how much food my lot ingest :)
