my bitch rejected her 3 puppies, so i am bottle feeding them, they are 11 days old, 2 days ago i took the female to the vets and was told she was dehydrated, so every hour day and night i am giving her rehydration fluids, the 2 males were fine yesterday then last night the little 1 was screaming in pain, i took him to the vets thinking he was constipated and she gave me some laxative for him, when i arrived home, within half an hour he was dead, i rushed back to the vets to see if they could revive him, but there was nothing they could do, they did a postmortem and said it was an infection picked up from the mothers milk, but they only fed off her just after she had a c/section, now the other 2 are on antibiotics and rehydration fluids. i am having "monty", as my daughter named him, cremated and his ashes put in an urn, then i can bring him home again to rest in peace where he belongs, with the people who loved and lost him so suddenly.

sounds like fading puppy syndrome to me, i will get staffie to e.mail you if you leave your addy on here and she will advice you on what to do, you will have to act fast if it is fading puppy because the sooner you treat the early symptoms the better the outlook :)

So sorry to hear about losing your pup. It is always heartbreaking. Today I lost 2 pug pups, aged almost 3 days old. They had fed, with assistance, but never able to 'latch on'. However they were plump and peaceful, contented pups, and I just assisted and held them on for each feed. At todays lunch time feed, within a few minutes of each other, they simly went rigid and then died. Only difference I could find is that both had very pale gums, noses and pink feet pads, think perhaps it could be some sort of heart defect. Keeping my fingers crossed that the remaining tow will be fine. Hope you manage to rear the rest of your litter too. Trouble is, the birth process is, initself, traumatice for the neonates, and the potential for infection in the first few days great, while the immune system is vulnuerable.
bye

thanks jacki, my email address is goldilox39uk@yahoo.co.uk. the vet did a post mortem and ruled out worms and fading puppy syndrome, he said they could have got an infection from their mothers milk, but she only fed them for a couple of days while under the effects of the anasthetic after the csection.
