My daughter has been prescribed antibiotics for a bladder infection, i took a sample in to the doctors and they send it off to the hospital who analyze it and then recommend which treatment will be effective.
Trimethoprim has been recommended now in 3 instances of infection and it has never worked on her.On Friday, it has been prescribed again, i repeatedly said it doesn't seem to help her and they said it will this time. 3 Days later it is having no affect! (As normal).
Is it possible that some antibiotics don't affect people??
I'm getting sick of this now as i have to wait the full 10 day course before they recommend anthing else, which normally shifts it.

Hi Im a nurse and what usually happens is the wee is analyzed and they tell you what strain of infection it is and what antibiotics it is sensitive too, trimethroprim 200 mg is given to treat most utis, may I suggest though, as it is a recurring thing that you find what is causing your little girl to get recurring infections. How old is she ?

Ohh Clare please help me lol.
I didn't catch what infection she has (i was told). My daughter is incontinent and is on Cephalexin (sp?) 1x a day to ward off infections.
Last week she had a urodynamics test and i was advised to up her dose to 2x a day but unfortunately she still got an infection.
She can be run down or now she is at school it is easy for her to get an infection, because she has a special needs teacher who may (accidently) transmit germs to her.
It is just a fact of life with Maisie that she is going to get them but i was wondering if i can DEMAND that she cannot have trimethorpim as it so obviously doesn't work even though it has been recommended?

p.s She has been using intermittent catheters for 2 years.(She is 4yrs old)

Hi Sarah,
I don't like antibiotics one bit. My Dad is having dreadful problems at the moment. He's had chronic sinus/respiratory infections for years and had many different ABs for it and it's never gone. He's just got over heart surgery which had to be cancelled first time as he had his resp. infection again. He got stomach ulcers after the op and now his cancer surgery has been cancelled because of his infection again. He is back on another AB which has made his stomach ulcers bleed (that's one of the side effects). I have been searching for alternatives to help him and Christine (Spain) kindly gave me a link about Manuka honey and we are trying that.

Although they may be lifesavers, I think AB's can be very dangerous and should only be given when absolutely nesseccary. Too many bugs are becoming resistant to them. It's also vital that people finish a course. Some people stop because they feel better before the end or because they think they aren't working (I know often they *aren't*!) If a course is abandoned early any bugs not killed are then immune to that antibiotic hence superbugs.

Have you tried cranberry juice for bladder infections? It stops the bacteria sticking to the bladder wall.

EDIT. Sarah, this site I *can* recommend. They scrutinise medical trials so there opinion is usually sound. :) http://www.jr2.ox.ac.uk/bandolier/band6/b6-3.html

Thanks for that Kath, and yes she has cranberry juice daily and has done for the past 2 yrs. She drinks at the least 3 pints a day(water too) to flush her bladder out but due to this procedure she has contracted another infection.
We have always finished a course of AB's as it is paramount to Maisie's health (not like having a cold) yet this Trimethoprim never seems to work even though it's recommended.
She cannot under no circumstances be without AB's, we have tried other alternatives and she has ended up in hospital with high fever.

She is just about managing with a raised temperature and cranky personality(which co-incides with infection) but she can't carry on like this it's just not on every time.
