Topic Dog Boards / General / irish setter's exercise
- By jess123 [gb] Date 23.11.03 20:20 UTC
i know of a lady who had 4 irish setters, 2 of which have been killed by cars, 1 recently a week ago.

she said hers are uncontrollable off lead, even though she trained them.

is it possible to exercise irish setters on lead?

i know they are very energetic dogs, but if you cant exercise in a enclosed SAFE area, surely you have to lead exercise them??

my setters are all traind and ran offlead. they havent had that much training but they have been taught to come back on call and they always get rewarded.

my setters do wander abit and are not always come back as quickly as my aussies but never the less they do come back and out of 5 only one ran across the roads and she was only a baby!

Thing with a setter is they just need to know that if the come back they get something for it!

as for exercising on lead, it is possible but its not the same. you could take them out on a bike.

I don't know much about Irish Setters, but I don't think exercising them on a bike would be any good. You don't have full control. What if one decided to chase something on the other side of the road? You could be pulled in front of a car. :(

Many, many years ago my grandfather was charged with not being in full control of his greyhound when he exercised her in this way. Don't know if you can now though. Just a thought.

i know two people who exercise their dogs by bike, also long as they are on privet land and not on the roads then nothing can be done.

the other option is to get an electric buggie that disabled people have but they are very expensive! luckly my nan has one so she can exercise the dogs!!!:D
