Hi Robert,
Are you the same Robert who has a springer that chases shadows, if you are can you tell me how you are dealing with it, we are having real problems walking at night as we take a torch but our little fella goes manic when we shine the beam.

Hi Sandie

Yup thats me :D, we tried various things that the vet suggested, which were mainly distracting her someway, with tidbits and games, but unfortunately nothing is more interesting then shadows, although I have to say as she gets older (she's now 15 months old) she seems to be getting slightly less interested in chasing them.
We've found walking her at night to be a pain like your self, so we invested in a torch that can be adjusted to show a very wide beam, so after a minute or two she forgets about the light.
At night she was a real pain in the you know what when we we're watching TV, so now when she starts we shut her in the hall for five minutes, and that seems to have tempered her need for chasing shadows on the TV.
The vet did suggest seeing a behaviourist but we decided to put up with it and hope she eventually grows out of it, and thinking about it she's not nearly as bad as when she was 6 months old.
I'm sorry I can't be more help, and I do sympathise, it can be really annoying some times when your dog is bouncing around pulling your arm off on the end of a lead, and when your sitting quiet and theres constant thudding as her paws hit shadows on the floor.
One consolation though she seems very happy judging the speed her tail is wagging all the time.

Thanks Robert.
Sam is now 12 months and he is getting better, we havent had him chasing anything on the tv yet his is mainly shadows from doors which he makes himself by pushing the door with his nose or leg and chasing the shadow as it goes across the wall, like your dogs his tail is wagging all the time so he's obviously having fun. He does seem to respond better when we tell him no whixh is helping.
Maybe by the time they are 2 they will have grown out of it.

Sorry to say this but ive been reading posts on this same thing here and other fourms ,
ive been speaking to another man who has a springer , and it dose the exact same thing its now 5 had some behavour training but it dident work. my cocker is the same and hasent grown out of it . its just something clever dogs do .
but hey if there wagging there tails at least there happy :D mine will watch the roof in the day time waiting for shadows made by the odd passing car , or throw herself down on the floor to catch her own shadow. cd's , shiney rings, keys. mirrors anything that has a refection she will push if left on the floor she will slam dunk them chasing the shadows. come nightime its her fav time she will sit watching the wall for ages.
it first started out with her about 9 weeks old watching my ring .
She will watch tv for hours but she wont chase anything:D telly tubbies seem to be her fav;)
