Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / "Professional" breeders
- By salem1 [gb] Date 16.02.02 10:01 UTC
I have had a somewhat bad experience with a so-called "professional" breeder. Could anyone inform me as to who I can contact with regards to making complaints about so-called "professional" breeders, in order to warn others of dealing with "professional" breeders.

I had a problem with a resturant once.
but i wasn"t after closing them all down.
Whats happened to make you so angry.
- By fleetgold [gb] Date 16.02.02 10:41 UTC
What exactly do you mean by "professional" breeder? Perhaps if you gave us more details someone might be able to advise.

Every breeder is different and there is no overall professional body overseeing what goes on. Can you give more information as giving a general warning with no specifics could do a lot more harm than good?

Hello Salem to my knowledge there is no one to report to . I dont know what your problem is as you have left it up in the air. presumably it is to do with a puppy , if you have any complaint, a cival action is all that is open to you. breeders are not part of any professional body to my knowledge. breeders are all individuals who spend a lifetime striving for the best possible results from their breed. and they mostly work alone. Iam sure if you would like to tell us your problem someone will try and help you. best wishes mari

"Professional breeders" are not all bad guys, and if you have had a bad experience with one, I suggest the best course of action is to try another one.
I too have run into some bad breeders ones whose conduct is questionable and unethical.
I found the best thing to do is research and go with peoples refferals.
Unfortuatley I doubt there is much more you can do.
good luck!

I think the word "professional" is rather ambiguous in this case.
"Professional" could mean that it is the persons source of income, which could make them a puppy farmer. On the other hand "professional" could mean they take their breeding to the limit of seriousness, perhaps one litter in 5 years, bred as near to perfection as they can, with every care lavished on the puppies. If its the latter, then I must be a "professional", but if its the former, then I must be a rank amateur!!! So you must 1st define "professional" and how it relates to this poSt.

I've been racking my brain to see if I could think of what had so upset this posted - was a prommised puppy witheld at the last moment, did the breeder want to do a home visit, did the bitch have the dam cheek to not produce the required number or the wrong sex or not produce at all. Or was it some thing realy serious - sick puppy, bad kenneling, cruelty. Unless you tell us we will never know, but if the problem is bad kennel practice then something can be done, let us know and we will advise. Jackie H

I dont know if im the only one wondering what it was Salem was talking about, when he said he wanted to report or warn people about a professional breeder.
Also why some person posts looking for help, and we go to the bother of trying to help and they are never heard of again mari
- By bumblebeeacres [us] Date 21.02.02 22:56 UTC
It always is nice to hear from them again isn't it? To know if you've been a help or if they were able to solve their problem. Feedback would definitley be appreciated.

Right or wrong one can't help wondering if the post was just to cause trouble, was the poster expecting a flood of complaints against breeders and not able to follow up the original posting as there was no real complaint. I hope not. Perhaps it was a small irritation and after posting he or she realised they were making a mounting out of a mole hill.
It still remains a worry that there really may be a problem which we could have helped with, I have the feeling we may never know. JH

Firstly, Salem1 has not yet revisited the board since making their original posting. This can mean many things and not necessarily that they were on the wind up :-) Maybe they were just venting their frustration and anger at the treatment that they have received by a breeder, maybe they are busy dealing with the 'problem' or maybe they are working and haven't had time to check for replies? Just because they haven't visited the board does not mean that they have not received your replies. Everyone who registers has the option to have 'email notification of replies'. As Salem1 may yet return, maybe we should wait and see :-) Secondly, where did Salem1 say they were male ;-)

Point taken Leigh. But he/she did find time to make the posting and it is now a week since? JH
- By sam Date 22.02.02 14:27 UTC
I went 3 weeks without visiting when my pc went down with a virus, then recently went a week or more because the telephone lines were blown down in a storm.......there could be a number of reasons why he/she hasn't been back.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 22.02.02 16:38 UTC
You may well be right , we shall see. JH
- By mari [ie] Date 22.02.02 17:28 UTC
Well im glad im not the only one feels that way. I mean we all have to pay to be online dont we? so why waste it, [however little ]... ,on someone who doesent reply , as jackie said they made the time to ask , I think they should make the time to reply.plus we still dont know why the person was so angry, To me anyway the question looked loaded , maybe the response did not suit the poster time will tell mari
- By salem1 [gb] Date 27.02.02 00:00 UTC
Dear all, thank you so much for your replies. Sorry I have been unable to reply sooner, this has been due to illness. As regards the professional breeder, this matter is now in the hands of our solicitor, but when an outcome is reached I will post more details. By the way Salem1 is a female.
- By mari [ie] Date 27.02.02 00:15 UTC
Hi Salem1 , sorry you were ill :o and sorry we thought you were not coming back. and still sorry we have to wait to see what it is all about:D mari
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 27.02.02 06:39 UTC
I too am sorry to hear you have been ill, and sorry you still do not feel able to tell us what it is that you are complaining of. Pity, we may have been able to help, as you asked in the first place you must have thought then that we may be able to, we may have saved your having to employ the law or at least pointed you in the best direction. Your story could have acted as a warning to others, but I supose we will have to wait until you feel able to tell us more. JH

Hmm my problem person is also female with health problems must be something in the air! She has said some pretty horrendous things about my breeding which I have passed onto the breeders of my bitch and stud dog who were not impressed to say the least.

This person too has consulted a solicitor and has now decided to adhere to the terms of our contract by breeding with the bitch! She sent me a cheque for half the agreed cost of the puppy stating I could return it so that her solicitor could write to me then she would deduct her solicitors fees from my final payment!

Of course the cheque was returned advising her that the full amount per the terms of the jointly signed agreement would be acceptable to conclude this matter. I have also advised her that I would take the bitch back. So I have yet to figure out why she has decided to breed from the bitch against the advice of her vet!

Part of the terms requires the bitch to be transferred back into my name for breeding, so I am now awaiting her next move regarding returning the signed documents and will take it from there.

Not all breeders are bad guys as many of us know, just now I know that some potential puppy buyers are, a lesson well learned I can tell you.

Poor you, it sounds like a completely horrendous and very complicated situation. I hope that you are able to sort things out and get the result you're looking for.

FAO Salem1
I can't even begin to understand your situation as you haven't been able to pass on any info. I bought my puppy from a breeder and although things weren't perfect I was extremely happy with everything. I hope you feel better soon - I'm ill as well, I've got the mumps and I've just been told that there's chicken pox going around my daughters nursery class so I'm wondering how long it'll take before we've got that as well. :( Add into all this a 12wk old cocker spaniel and it's no wonder I'm going grey at 26 :D

Good thing that everyting is in writing. What a nightmare! It's always a good idea to read and fully understand the terms of a contract BEFORE signing them. Ethically each person has an obligation to hold true to there half of the terms that they had willingly signed.
