- By guest [gb] Date 22.11.03 18:46 UTC
I have a japanese akita pup who is now eleven weeks old,
from the age of nine weeks he started to develop a bowed
leg the more he is growing the more it is bowing we have
so far seen two vets neither one can diagnosis him without
x rays and possibly surgery to find out,is there anyone who
has experienced similar problems please send information
as I am at a loss.

kind regards
shelly

Have you contacted his breeder?
Is it front or rear?
Can't say I've heard of it before & would be reluctant to put an Akita thru' a GA at such a young age, but at the same time, sounds as if it should be sorted sooner rather than later.
Not much help, sorry.

Hi Shelly

The only time I saw this was when the new owners were feeding the pup cheese because it would not eat its dog food. They returned it to me and within a few weeks it looked normal again - their vet was going to operate and cut its bones about.

What are you feeding your pup, is it growing very fast - if a pup is growing too fast it can affect its growth plates

I was going to say a similar thing Christine.

The only time I have heard or seen anything similar was with a Dobermann pup, who unfortunately ended up with a young lady who was not the brightest of people, and she was feeding vitamin tablets and vetzyme to it in the most incredible doses.

Can't say I ever knew what happened to it poor thing, as she moved out of the area.

Have seen it in a pup kept in a cage that was too low to allow the dog to stand up properly, returned to the owner at about 6 or 7 months it recovered fully and has had success in the show ring.

Hi,

I'm probably being a bit naïve here but why not get the dog x-rayed?

Because an xray would mean a GA & Akitas do not always react well to anaesthetics - this one is only 11 wks

Immediate cage rest for starters.

Let me say before I go any further: I am NOT the breeder of this puppy, but I do know her. Shelly - you have posted this question on almost every website that there is. The breeder is only too happy to fulfil the contract that was taken out when the puppy was sold: ON RECEIPT of a letter from the your vet, stating that there is a problem, the puppy will either be replaced, or a refund given. However you haven't responded to the emails - the puppy left with full insurance, so there should not be vet's bills. What IS the problem?
