hi everybody my bitch is 34 days and I just wondered about what time will she show. She is a little bit more rounded but this seems to change e.g In the morning she looks quite slim and you can see her tuck but in the evening she looks more rounded and almost loses her tuck. She is due at the vet next sat 22. Will the vet be able to feel the puppies. She will be 42 days then. If she has an x ray(my vet hasnt got a scanner) is this 100 per cent reliable.

hi
i've read in all my books not to have an xray when the bitch is pregnant as it harms the puppies or some thing like that,i'll go and look that bit up and come back to you,my staff was 4wks yesterday i'm taking her for a scan on sunday as theres this lady in nuneaton who used to be a midwife but now runs a kennel and scans dogs,i've been told shes brilliant and can tell you after 4wks whether they've taken or not :)

They won't let you in the xray room if you're pregnant so would you really be comfortable having your dog xrayed just to see what's happening?
The vet might be able to manipulate and feel any pups or even hear their tiny heartbeats a bit later in the pregnancy... good luck :D

HI, My bitch is 7 weeks now and has lost her tuck and looks fatter! She did look a bit bigger at 5 weeks, but the main thing I noticed was her undercarriage developing!
I would agree with the other post about if your pregnant not being near x-rays, same reason I would not have one done. Although if there is a good reason and its necessary...well then you have to. I think by next week you vet will be able to feel and say yes or no, although not how many she is having.
I had my bitch scanned at 35 dayd and was told 2 puppies only, but others have said they were told 4 and had 10! So I guess I will find out in 2 weeks or so! Good luck and fingers crossed for you.
Thanks for the advice. I wont have her xrayed,I just wondered how many and just to make sure not a phantom pregnancy. I thought if the vet suggested it it was safe. I will post after 22nd and let you know news from vet.

Hi
The lady at Nuneaton is indeed the best and to be fair every human mother has to have an untra sound so if its a one off it shouldnt harm your bitch but your bitch isnt looking over pregnant but if its her first litter then she may not show till 5 weeks but it would at least confirm for you if your waiting for nothing. Have her 2nd set of nipples changed as this is usually a good indication and has her vulva gone right back down or stayed slightly swallen. Its a killer the waiting for the signs so if your not sure go and have an ultra sound.
Yes her second set of teats are now swollen and her belly does seem a bit fatter especially when she lays on her back with her legs in the air. She had a clear jelly discharge yesterday as well.

Be aware that usually in a first litter there will be puppies tucked up under the ribs, and also these days (sadly) because of people being more likely to cause trouble, vets will under rather than over estimate the size of a litter. I was told four and my girl had a litter of nine!! :D

Stop it! You all are scaring me, LOL! When Daisy had to have her x-ray yesterday (a necessity unfortunately), they saw 9. I asked about pups hiding under the ribs and the vet said she was sure there were more under the ribs...she guessed about 12 alltogether. Now you all seem to have DOUBLE what is visible... and that would be insane, because Daisy would have 18 pups in her! I sure hope THIS vet is closer in her guess of 12, because that's more than enough as it is!!!

Depends on the breed but our breed has usually 5--7 and then sometimes more but the bigger breeds can have loads.
The signs are there for her then you didnt say if she was a maiden bitch but my bitch blew up in the summer and missed came as a real shock as she has never missed had her looked at today though and even though it didnt quite go according to plan as she freaked a bit but we did get to see one puppy before we gave up as didnt want to cause her any stress. What a relief as was beginning to think we were finished but I'm not going to hold my breath as its still early but roll on 20th of Dec and then roll on a week later if they come. And they say breeding is easy.

My bitch was a maiden. ::shrug::
just got back from vets. my girl is now 42 days but vet cant feel any puppies. She is showing all the signs still, swollen teats ,clear discharge and is quite a BITFATTER but the vet said she would expect her to be a bit bigger at this stage. I hope this is not a phantom. Would the vet definetely be able to feel pups at this stage or could they be under her ribs. Just a waiting game for the next three weeks is she or isnt she?

why don't you go and get her scanned, then you would know for deffinate :)
vicky
i had saffie scanned last sunday, and saw three little pups developing, she is 38 days today and looks like a beached whale :D
My vet does not have a scanner. Does anyone know any vets in Middlesex near Hounslow and Feltham that do. I dont drive so they would have to be quite close.
Our chiko was in whelp and kept having contractions, vet scanned her and said there was no pups in there,I kept insisting there was as she was having all these contractions,he X-rayed her and said she was too fat but when he weighed her she was only 44 kg,(she has a mega coat)and after 2 X-rays ,it showed that she still had another 2 pups inside, both were delivered by C and all 4 were fine,5 if you count chiko,so,do we believe vets or go with instinct?????
hi there have you phoned youngs hounslow central, dont know if they have a scanner
where do you live has i live in middlesex??
mandy
Hi Mandy
I will give Youngs a ring on Monday. I live in Bedfont
lol:)
i live lower feltham :)
mandy
Hi Mandy rang Youngs and yes they do have a scanner but want to sedate her and keep her there for the day. Asked if I could be there but said no. I have decided not to have it. She still is not very fat although her teats are still swollen and having clear discharge now and then. If this is a phantom pregnancy will she go right to day 63 and have a false labour. She is 45 days now I asked my vet when I would be able to see them move but she said you cant see puppies move. I have read on previous posts that people have felt their puppies move. What stage of the pregnancy would this be. She is a maiden bitch by the way.

Hi
Feel kind of guilty now as my bitch is 6 weeks on Saturday and is massive it really sounds that your bitch is having a phantom its so easy to look at them and convince yourself that maybe but seeing my girl compared to when she missed her nips are huge and a right good pot belly.
You can see movement with Staffs quite easily usually at the 8 week mark they start leaping about and they go bonkers a couple of days before they are due its a weird thing to see and feel.
I have spoken to quite a few breeders this year and there seems to be a lot that have missed a friend of mine and his own Champion bitch has missed and this was a repeat mating of the top stafford bitch this year so he is well niffed but it can be like that and the thing is to mate her a couple of days earlier next time and 3 to 4 days between to try her again this bitch of mine has been mated on her 9th day this time but I am lucky as I have a male that lets me know and as soon as she was willing to stand for him off we went to the Champ dog.
let us know if anything happens
Hi
She is 7 weeks now and has got quite a pot belly but is not very big at the sides. When she sits down or lies on her back she does look very swollen. Her teats are huge especially the first two sets. I have not felt any movement but will keep a look out from eight weeks. If this is a phantom would she go into labour at the end or will she just act like she has had pups and start collecting cuddly toys. She did have a phantom last season but she was not mated and it started 2 weeks after her season finished.
Hi all
just thought I would let you know that tonight I was sitting with my girl with my hand resting on her belly and suddenly there was a big kick from within. You can also see movement when she is lying on her side. I am so pleased that this is the real thing its horrible thinking is or isnt she. Is this early for movement as she is only 50 weeks today.

50 weeks - what is she - an elephant?????? :D. Sorry, only joking, couldn't resist! Think 7 weeks is quite early, but not exceptionally so. Sounds as if you're going to be busy. Good Luck!!

Hi
Great really pleased she has movement can be around 7 weeks so I shall be feeling and looking for my bitch's babies next week. What is the dog you used and what colour is your bitch.
Meant to come back earlier but had I am told bloody piles, like a tooth ache up you bum but I had this bad tummy flu so I hope I dont get them again.
Keep us posted so its around the 15th then they are due
Hi
My girl is black and the dog I used was afriends. She is 56 days today and really big now. She finds it really hard to get comfortable and is very restless. I found her in the cupboard under the stairs earlier scrapeing about at the back. She is still eating ok so I dont suppose she is due yet. The puppies are going a bit mad in there though and you can see them wriggling about. I got a copy of the book of the bitch on Tuesday and have been reading it eversince. Its quite a scary read though all the things that can go wrong.
