Topic Other Boards / Foo / Scaphoid bone anyone?
- By kazz Date 22.11.03 01:39 UTC
Think I'm having a nostalgic evening, I can't sleep as my hand is itching in my plaster I have a broken/fractured scaphoid bone in my hand it links my thumb to my wrist it seems, they missed it on the xrays when I broke my arm a couple of months ago (they concentrated Xrays on my arm not my hand) so although my hand really hurt I put it down to being not used for a while.

But Wednesday the pain was so bad I went to the Doctor (who I hadn;t seen before) and he said I'd broken this bone located in the snuff box. Yes the snuff box is an area of the hand :D HONEST

Xray proves yes I have but it started to heal then stopped when I had the plaster off only partly healed it seems because I had movement of my thumb in the plaster cast this is borne out it seems by the broken calcium around the bone, because I could move my thumb in the other plaster it didn't heal. Hence the pain.

Now in plaster again hand to elbow. If it's straighforward I'm in plaster for 6-8 weeks.

Going back again Wed to have Xray to see if it's starting to knit together properly. If not I get to have a operation to break it again, pin it and reset. If this is the case they say it could be 12-14 weeks min.

Anyone else done this to this bone, heard a few horror stories about it. I need reassurance. I know this is the bone David Beckham broke in his hand. So maybe I'm in good company.

Can't drive in fact I can't move my thumb at all luckily I can still move my fingers, so not all bad.

At the hospital they offered me a choice of 8 colours, I choose blue they didn't have it, choose purple they didn't have it so asked what colour they did have they said only Red so oddly enough I choose red :D

Karen (fed up and unable to drive)

Sorry to hear about your hand, but just think the England Rugby Team alternative shirt is red, as is the cross on St Georges flag, and my favourite colour wine is RED!!!

You should have asked for red and white ;) then you could say David Beckham had his the exact same way :D:D

oh dear Karen, poor you..... I broke my schaphoid 18 years ago & it still has'nt healed, I've had something like 23 plasters on over the years, plus a bonegraft from my hip screwed into my wrist & still it has'nt healed... have heard of others that heal up no problem though, so don't worry...

Geoff:)

Yes Geoff

Your tale is what most people seem to tell me, although they also say lots heal fine. Even the woman in the plaster room went "Ohhh not the Schaphoid bone, thats' nasty" as you can imagine that didn't give me a great boost of confidence.

Until this week I had never heard of the damned bone and I really wish I still hadn't.

My hand hurts and I don't think it should, they are talking about pinning mine already so I imagine that's what will hapen. There again on the plus side it is my left. And as a right handed person I'm pleased about that. But worse I can't go to work, they say for 6 weeks up to now. I've to rest it for two weeks holding it in a sling upwards. Which I am doing faithfully as I really want this to heal.

Oh well could be worse I expect.

Karen
Have to wait until Wednesday.

So sorry to hear you are having such trouble with your fractured scaphoid. I did mine playing netball as a teenager, many years ago!. Fell over and thought it was only a bad sprain. The next morning had an X-Ray as it had been so painful, and it was a fracture. Plastered for 6 weeks - right hand, so couldn't write properly - but fortunately healed well as it only needed manipulating and not surgery.
This time last year I was in hospital with a broken ankle. The malleolus (ankle bone) was very out of place, and it was plated and pinned with six pins. The bottom pin has slipped or become loose, and I now have to keep a dressing over it incase it breaks the skin, as the pins are only taken out as last reasort.

Hope you get on ok with your wrist and plaster, and hopefully it will heal well

Cheers.

Roni.
