My 15 month old male golden retriever, seems to be very unsociable with other dogs.

when he was a pup probably 8 months old he was bitten on the mouth by a larger dog and on the backside
by another.

He now seems every opportunity he growls and tries to fight with other dogs. can anyone help

My dog also tries to attack and fight any other dog - no matter what size. I don't know what happened to him before I got him but I have consulted my vet who has referred me to a behaviourist (it's not cheap but if it helps it will definitely be worth it). I tried myself to train him from a book but it wasn't working and I'm now going to consult professionals as walking him was becoming a pain. I'd ask your vet if they know anyone. At 15 months he should be able to be trained out of it and become better socialised. My dog's a bit older but I have to get help for him as at the moment we take our walks at 6am and midnight! Good luck with your dog.

Thanks for that information.

He is so loving and affectionate with everybody, but he wants to boss the whole neighborhood.

I am scared to take him out sometines.

Does he start to play ok with other dogs, then it gets out of hand. Im having that problem with Star she wants to play but gets far to rough for the other dogs, then they end up fighting.

young male dogs around this age quite often like to be the alpha male rushing in head first for a fight ,but they do mellow with age and end up not quite so eager to fight i also owned a male who loved to fight he was a boxerxdoberman but he did grow out of it.

hi i would think about getting him neutered ,as my dog would try and fight every dog he saw, and my vet said if he was neutered it could calm him down,i got my dog neutered and he did calm down,i would ask your vet about it.

A freind of mine has a male retreiver and so far he has attacked the bitch that used to live with him (they rehomed her), and has attacked several dogs around by us that he used to play with as a pup. The ownere has had him neutered but this did not calm him down with highting, she now muzzles him every time they go out because as soon as he sees a dog he goes wild. She has been to beharourstits (speeling) which nothing has worked, he now see's a physcologist which is beinging to work, he has hans on treatment which realeases tension in the body and calms him down and he now has to earn toys when out.
But she still muzzles him as she is frightened he will do something.

If your dog was like this after he was attacked, then he is doing it because he is afraid of the other dogs as you have realised :)

The thing to do is to get him to realise other dogs are OK - but you will probably need help with this. Can you ask your vet to refer you to a behaviourist? They would hopefully give you a modification programme to help your dog after assessing his reactions. At 15 months he can hopefully be turned around...very few dogs grow out of fear like this, he will need help.
