Bit of a strange question but I am hearing two sides and I have no idea which is correct! My mum says that a bitches urine will burn grass but a dog's won't. Whenever Tally (a boy) pees on the garden my partner is out with the watering can washing it away so it doesn't burn!
Does male and female urine burn grass or just the females? Told you it was a strange one!!:)

I think it's just the girlie's wee 'cos it's more alkaline. But I think life's too short to be running about with jugs of water anyhow:-)

id read it was bitch urine--you're male will most likely be peeing ontop of the bitches anyhow, so you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone :)

There was a thread a little while ago which said about adding tomato juice to your bitches food to stop the wee burning the grass. Anyone remember how much you were supposed to give them?

Hi Lynn, I think it was a tablespoon, but might have been two, per day.

Dogs urine does burn grass & bushes & shrubs & plants in pot & plants in the ground & young trees it does not seem to affect bitches or visitors legs or on one memerable occasion a judges (yes he was placed) My line post has a circle of dead grass where my boys bless it every time they go out.
Take no notice of your husband bet he will soon tire of it once you have more than one dog, and what happens when he (your husband) goes out do the dogs cross their legs.
Sorry about the spelling and sorry not to take your question too seriously but it will damage the lawn and if that matters you will have to make seperate arrangements for the dogs. Jackie H
PS Is the dog who stands to relive himself spayed? If so this is why.

Yes Jackie, Sam was neutered at 10 months and is now 18 months so it looks like that will be his "style" for life.

It doesn't necessarily follow that a neutered male will not cock his leg. I have a 6 year old neutered male that cocks his leg. You might just find it takes a bit longer for the penny to drop Sara :D
My Border Collie didn't cock his leg till he was 3 and a half he is also neutered.

My unneutered dobermann never cocked his leg all of his life. Mind you he was hand reared by my mum and I from being 2 days old, so probably thought he was a female human! Now, I wonder if we could train our other halves...;) wishful thinking!

Morris sometimes can't decide which leg to lift, so just lifts both and does a hand stand!:D he also occasionally hops down steps on front legs alone(We are secretly suspicious that he has circus blood in him!!;) )

Our Weimaraner was neutered late at four years old and he used to pee like a girl when no one was looking and cock his leg if there were other dogs around! :) His wee burnt our newly laid lawn, the one my husband had plans to culivate as a putting green!!!! :D

Hi :) Westie Lover's post of 3/11/01 said Gardeners Question Time recommended two tablespoons of pure tomato juice morning and evening for a large dog, reducing the amount depending on the size of dog. This should start to work in a week or so. Sierra suggested cider vinegar in the water.
Aren't the archives wonderful! :D

Using addatives to alter the chemical properties of urine can lead to kidney stones :-(

Actually, it's not a strange question at all. Both dogs and bitches urine burns the grass. It's not so bad at this time of year coz all that damn rain rinses it away. You can buy a tablet to feed with their food and that changes the acidity/alkalinity of the wee, supposedly. I haven't used it.
Hats of to your partner for wandering round with a watering can. The neighbours will start to think he's a bit odd tho ;-)

Pam n the boys with lots of brown circles in the summer, and mud all winter :(

No I agree it's not a strange question!
I think the dosage of tomato was two teaspoons in their water but don't quote me on that, maybe some-one had better trawl the archives for that one?
I don't get the burning of the grass and I have more girls than boys! The girls go out first in the morning, then the two boys go out, mostly as they like to "patrol their estate" so to speak and are out for three times longer than the girls!! I have always been of the opinion that bitches wee burns but that as the boys usually pee over it they neutralise it! However, there are a couple of the shrubs which they lift their legs on that are burnt so I guess their pee can burn too as the girls can't reach that high;D :p

(who's back garden looks like the England Rugby Squad use it for practise sessions, and I only have Cavaliers, goodness only knows what it would like with a bigger breed!!)

My three always follow one another in a queue and use the same places, definatly kills the grass, saves getting the strimmer out round post in the summer.
