How, when, and with waht should you clean the ears of a springer spaniel?

One ear of my 5 month bitch has some dark wax down in the 'crinkly' bit, about as far as you can see. Is this normal, or should it be cleaned out?

Yes it is quite normal to see a little wax in the ears but all dogs with floppy, pendulous ears like Springers should have their ears cleaned fairly regularly to stop a build up of excess wax etc I have found the most effective ear cleaner for my Cockers is Leo Ear Cleaner which you can get from your vet - you can use this routinely, say once a week. If your Springer is scratching her ears, shaking her head or the ears look inflamed inside, then it's best to get things checked out by your vet, but if she seems fine, then just use an ear cleaner on a regular basis as part of your normal grooming routine

I use Thornit which is a powder for TH's ears. It stops the waxy build up and any infection. I do them once a week and she much prefers it to liquid ear cleaners. You can buy it from Champion Pets which are on the internet.
