One of my Weimaraner pups has markings on her that are identical to a Dobermans, although the colour is not tan, just a beige colour. The pup looks very striking, but I was just wondering if anyone had heard of this happening before and the reason for it?

These are called Dobermann markings or "Ginger Jobs"; certain lines are more likely to throw them and there are one or two stud dogs who have! The pups are usually sold for a lot less money without papers as pets only with contracts ensuring that they will be neutered so that they cannot pass on this fault.
It is thought to be a throwback from the original sources of Weimaraners the St Hubert Hound who would have had these type of markings.

One of my bitches litter sisters had these, looked just like she'd been paddling in peach paint! She was sold, heavily endorsed, as 'pet only' for half the price of the rest of the pups. This was twenty years ago now mind, don't think they are at all common now - as a fault, I'd imagine breeders are trying to reduce the incidence of mismarks? I'd be interested to know which lines throw these up to see where my old girls pedigree ties in - been looking into it quite a lot recently in preparation for weim no 2!

Tan markings are a recessive gene so you now know that both mum and dad of your pups carries the gene recessively! It also means that each of the puppies born has a 50% chance of carrying it as well. 25% chance of being totally clear and 25% chance of being tan pointed!

Hi guys,
I met a wonderful working weimeraner with the tan markings a couple of years ago on a Dog Trainers course. He was a lovely dog and apparently his owner had been asked quite a few times for him to be used as a stud-she didn't (of course), but its amazing how many people want mismarked/coloured dogs. I know of a Black and Tan marked labrador and her owner is also always being asked if she's a 'new colour' labrador.
People are strange :)

The marked pup was picked by a couple over another bitch as they loved the look of her. The other potential owner for the last bitch was disappointed as she wanted the marked pup also, so it does seem to be very popular. We have stressed to the owners that it is for pet only, which they are very happy about, so I'm just glad we have a very good loving home for her to go to.

This demonstrates the importance of good research before breeding and picking people's brains before putting certain dogs to certain bitches as reputable breeders, exhibitors will be able to steer people away from dogs that throw wry mouths, wrong colouring, poor temperaments etc etc.
