Harry and Piglet have been behaving
very oddly for the past two or three days. They keep sniffing at their sister Beattie's left eye (never the right) then coming over all unnecessary and launching an immoral assault upon her person. She was spayed years ago, and was never interested in 'that sort of thing' even when entire, so she is well and truly miffed. It's starting to distress her, so I'm having to shut the boys away when I'm busy.
I can't see anything wrong with her eye at all; it isn't inflamed, there's no discharge - what could make her eye (only one of them, mind) so exciting?
Jan
I truly believe that dogs can sense when something is amiss so I wouldn't be at all surprised if she does have a problem with her eye even if it is not visable to you yet.Maybe they are trying to tell you something.
Sue

A vet's appointment called for, then.
How old is Beattie?Could be a cattaract(can't spell that !)
Sue

She's 8. A cataract is inside the eyeball itself, so I can't imagine that being sensed from the outside. And there's no sign of cloudiness in her eye. And all the eyelashes are as normal ..... it's just so strange. It doesn't bother her - she's not rubbing at it, or blinking a lot, or anything like that. If it wasn't for the boys' behaviour you wouldn't think there's anything different about her.

We've been to see our favourite vet (and discovered Beattie was his last patient before he retired :( - shows how often we go!) and he thinks she may have either an abscess or a tumour behind her eyeball, which is starting to cause pressure. :( We have eyedrops and antibiotics, and go back again on Monday.

What great dogs you've got JG! An early warning system is a great thing :D
Sorry your girl is poorley but it's better that it was found now before it got much worse.
Hope Beattie makes a speedy recovery, fingers and toes crossed.
I did see a tv programme about dogs, where a dog was trained to sniff out cancer on patients, it was remarkable as he was so accurate.

Maybe they're telling her she should have gone to Specsavers!!! :) :)
On a serious note.......it's that weird sixth sense thing again, no ingrowing eyelashes maybe.........?
Heard about a dog doing this to its owner, staring at her and nuzzling into her chest.Turned out she had breast cancer.
Think I would get your girl checked by the vet.
Hope it isn't anything to worry about.
Regards,
Linda
Believe it or not that is exactly how my Breast Cancer was found. My boy jumped up on my knee and hit my breast causing me to wince. I thought it was just a bruise and took no notice. He did the same thing two weeks later making me check what was hurting and there was the lump.
Had a masectomy and re-construction short time later and because it was found early there was no spread through the lymph nodes.
I have so much to thank him for he is one specail boy.
So yes JG I agree with the others dogs do have senses about things so better get it checked out.

I read somewhere recently that they are starting to research using dogs for sniffing out cancer in humans. Cancerous cells do give off a scent that dogs can detect apparently. I also remember reading a magazine article a year or two back where a lady's dog was constantly licking the same patch on her arm and whining. She did notice a mole and when she got it checked out it was cancerous. Aren't dogs clever to not only smell it, but to know it is dangerous to their owner!

Hello. I would take her to the vet. I have nerve pain on my right leg sometimes and I know when I am going to have an attack because Gia, my Bullmastiff, sniffs and lick it, usually the day before the pain starts.

Jan
Such clever little doglets !!!! Good luck for Monday........everything crossed.
Sue
How did you get on with Beattie today JG? Hope all is well?
Hayley

Well, she's improved, so that's good. We go back on Friday, though, when she's had a few days off the antibiotics. If it's got bad again it'll indicate a abscess, and we'll have to decide whether she has the eye removed to drain it. :( But she doesn't tolerate anaesthetics well, so surgery is a very difficult option to take in her case.
More anxious waiting, I fear. Thanks for the concern.
:)
Will keep my fingers crossed for Beattie.
Regards,
Linda
Will keep everything here crossed too, thank goodness the boys spotted something amiss

Hope your special girl i ok on friday, best of luck to you both, you must be worried sick, I know I would be
Good job you took notice of them J/G. A couple of yrs ago my dogs wouldn`t leave 2 of the girls alone, they were mid season so knew it wasn`t that, took them the vet & they both had a vaginal infection, no discharge or any signs of it either.
Hope all goes well for her on Friday.
Christine, Spain.
ps I was looking on herbal sites at the weekend for treatment for abcesses, I could see if I can find the one for animals if you think it would help?

Have they thought of glaucoma. I remember Dilita when she first started with it, her daughter kept on licking it etc. when I took her to the vets at first he thought it was a tumour, luckily it wasn't and she's not really had any problems with it. Hope everything works out OK

They've considered glaucoma, but apparently none of the indicators (when they dilate the pupil and shine bright lights in) are there. There's no sign of trouble in her ears, or teeth or palate to indicate a source of trouble. The boys are leaving her alone now (for which she is extremely grateful!) but she is more clingy than usual. The trouble is, at the vet she goes in for 'passive resistance' - "You can do what you want, but I won't talk" sort of thing (she'd make a great secret agent) and gives no sign of when it hurts.
Dogs, eh?!
Thinking of you JG and keeping my fingers crossed. :)
Kath xx

I'm willing to try anything, Christine, so if you learn of anything, please let me know.

Hi JG
Sorry but I missed this one.
Have they checked for a wart in her inner eye lid at all ?
Mars had one which got infected and the girls used to go mad and try and lick it all the time. I caught her when they hadn't been clening it up and it was in an awful state but hadn't noticed as they had been doing a very good job of keeping it clean.
Do hope you get to the bottom of this.
Lucy

Thanks ever so much, Christine. I'll have a look and see if I can get some ideas. You are kind.
:)
Thats OK J/G :)
Perhaps until you decide if you want to try anything, you could get some good organic propolis & a liquid form (made from the whole plant) echinacea to give her, won`t do any harm. I forgot to give the link below about echinacea :)
