Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / spray for bitches?
- By guest [us] Date 20.02.02 12:06 UTC
Hi, a friend said there is a spray for bitches, that when applied to the rear, it keeps the males away.
If so how effective is it?
I want molly to have a first season before spaying, but i have Jimmy and i don't want him to be castrated or send him away for 3 weeks, these were the options given by my vet, although she has agreed to spay molly before her first season and said that the incontinence issue was not proven.
So if this spray exists, could this be the answer to allowing molly to have her first season.
I had never thought of having a bitch because of the problems involved, however a breed advisor said that she advises a bitch, as they would bond better and that the males would fight. So that's why i had a bitch puppy.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards
Bonny

You can get a spray but you can't fool a red blooded dog that easily. You can get tablets for your dog but you will still have to keep them in seperate rooms from about her 8th day but it should make him a lot less interested, I'd speak to your vet. Oh by the way the the tablets are not contraceptives so don't take any risks. JH

There is a spray you can get from bac to nature (they have a website) it is very effective I have used it with my bitches with a male dog here but it really depends on how rampant your male is if he has never had a bitch you may be ok contact them anyway and they will send you the info

What breed are your dogs? Suppose it really makes little difference. Speaking entirely from my own personal experience, my females that were spayed before their first heat cycle have never had a problem with incontinence and they are all between the ages of 1-year up thru 10-years old. However, I do have a female that was spayed after having litters of puppies, that wets herself at the slightest excitement and another female that was spayed after having had one-heat season, that unless I make certain, she has emptied her bladder right before bedtime, will undoudtedly leave a pool where she has slept. So now, given the option, I would spay prior to the first heat season, taking advantage of the benefit of preventing mammary cancers. So I wonder, if perhaps the incontinence theory is
as your vet said, 'unproven'; or perhaps my experiences are just an exception. So I think you are going to find opinions vary quite a bit on this subject. I would go with my vets recommendation. (By the way all my girls are Westies)

Might it be easier to neuter your dog than put a bitch through a major operation hat may leave her with a level of incontinece? I certainly wouldn't trust a spray or tablets enough to ever leave the two unsupervised while she is in season.
