Hi,

I regularly walk kara with a friend and his 2 dogs (dally and ridge pup) and am now concerned because his pup is at the vets on a drip fighting for its poor little life after picking up parvo virus.

i know this may sound totally selfish but youve gotta look after your own.. Mine is fully vaccinated - do i have anything to be concerned about with regards to her becoming ill?
- By dizzy [gb] Date 18.11.03 19:20 UTC
was the puppy vaccinated????? or was it owned by someone who doesnt believe in them ---------either the vac failed-----or theyve not had one done--poor thing
- By andy_s_80 [gb] Date 18.11.03 19:42 UTC
the pup was vaccinated a soon as it was old enough - they got it at 7 weeks but with having another dog plus one is a vet nurse the poor little bugger was always going to be at risk

There's a bout of Parvo going around the town here where I live (Ireland). Awhile back I mentioned to the vet that I'd be OK as all my dogs were vacc'd.
He told me that was not guaranteed. He was saying that this strain is felling as many vacc'd dogs as unvacc'd dogs, and its breaking his heart to keep treating them.
I keep my dogs at home now, we walk in the fields directly around the house, and don't go to any of the more pupblic places. Especially now there are pups in the house.
Be careful out there guys

As long as your vaccinations are up to date you SHOULD be ok. Unfortunatly there are always a few dogs where the vaccines don't take so I would keep a close eye on things for the time being.

By the way, It does not sound selfish to me! There is nothing you personally you can do about your friends dog. Your priority is to your own dogs.

she seems ok so far - not too sure what im looking for tbh but shes eating well and still full of energy etc. just worrying for worryings sake i think

Diarrhoea starts usually 5 to 7 days after infection. Sickness, Dehydration from the diarrhoea and sickness. An older dog can throw off the effects with a little luck but the young and very old are often fatal. Parvo is very serious so don’t take any chances. If you think you have trouble then tell your vet and he will no doubt take the necessary precautions. A dog with parvo in a waiting room is not a good idea!!

You should be fine so watch but try not to worry too much.

Regards, John

Hi Andy, how old is the pup & how old is Kara now? Probably the very first signs would be depression but I`m sure you`d know if she started feeling unwell. Try not to worry she should be OK :)

the pup is 12 weeks, kara is 14 months.

Depression is never an issues with Kara - quite the opposite lol

has the vet said parvo for sure!!!! as there is something going around with the same effects./
- By andy_s_80 [gb] Date 19.11.03 18:21 UTC
yes, hes cetain its parvo. the pup is still going though (just). as they are quite close to the vet he is doing everything he can and has just bought in a new drug which contains feline dna and is thought to be a far better treatment (at #150 a day id hope it was).

Hi Andy, glad to hear pup`s coming along, he should be turning the corner any day now with a bit of luck :)
I take it Karas doing OK then :)
Do you know when & how the vet diagnosed parvo & also how many & what vaccs the pup recieved? It sounds like there could be some doubt with the efficacy of the vaccs & an adverse reaction report should be made.

ps. which country are you in?
- By andy_s_80 [gb] Date 20.11.03 19:02 UTC
the pup was fully vaccinated but they were told that parvo has a incubation period of up to 2 weeks so they probably wouldnt have had chance to take effect (pup is like 12 weeks so only had its second set of vacs a week ago). Kara still seems ok :) still full of energy and no diorreah (sp) am still keeping a close eye on her though!
- By Christine Date 20.11.03 20:45 UTC
Hi Andy, yes they always say that. There is just as much chance that the vaccine gave parvo to the pup or it failed to protect him :( I really think they ought to make a suspected adverse reaction report about it. Their vet should do it but if he doesn`t want to then it`s very easy for them to do it themselves, the form can be downloaded from the web & sent off by email. Hope he`s doing OK?
Glad Karas still full of beans, I`m sure she`ll be just fine :)

I nursed a 6 week old pup through parvo (very unpleasant) and he lived til 14 years. Fingers crossed for your friends pup.

(The boss of the office I was working in at the time heard of a litter of pups in appalling conditions so bullied us into rehoming them all! He was a very loving dog, just hated other dogs as he lost out on early socialisation.)

Hi Andy, I`d say your Kara would be as safe can be expected from catching parvo, it usually effects puppies & dogs under 1yr, but remember these viruses don`t play to our tune! At least you know it`s about so if Kara shows anything out of the ordinary you can take her straight to the vet :)
I nursed my litter of 12wks old thru it, they`ll be 3 next April & they made a full recovery, hoefully this little pup will be OK.

My husbands puppies were diagnosed with Parvo at 6 weeks of age . However they treated both of them for Parvo and it turns out that their condition must have been something else as the smallest wasn't expected to live for the next few hours let alone come thru this ordeal OK . I don't think that there is a name for this "other" bug but I do know that it is becoming increasing common , just lets hope that its not as fatal as Parvo. I don't mean to build your hopes up but be vigilant.

I hope the little one make it :(

Taz got parvo at 6 months and he is now 10 years old. My hubby and I nursed him ourself never went to the vet. Parvo was going around where we lived and I was surprised he got it even though his last set of shots were at about 3 months old. He's still alive and happy and so are we :)

Sending prayers for the little one
