Topic Dog Boards / General / dodgy breeding advice...
- By Boxers_uk [gb] Date 16.11.03 10:12 UTC
Just thought i'd share my experience last night....

Walking my bitch - quite late at night, and was stopped by a person who commented on 'What a lovely dog' My bitch is SUCH a people dog she loves everyone and anyone, so she was quite enjoying a fuss from the guy, i've seen him around a few times. Seems like a nice guy... anyway...
He commented on her temperament, she's got THE sweetest personality and is SOOO well mannered, but i was so shocked when i got this...

"She's really lovely, you should breed her" !!! (WHAT?)
"I've got a mate with a dog, you don't need any papers or anything, could flog the pups for £100 quid easily with no papers"
"My mates dog, really good, would go really nice with this one, all he'll want is a few pups"

It took me i don't know how long to find a suitable bitch with the correct temperament and pedigree to kick of my breeding programme, it's cost me an absolute bomb just preparing the dogs for mating, i've wanted to get this perfect, go about it the right way, to start my line as well as i possibly could..

anyway, i just mumbled to the guy about my Bitch being spayed (she's not), i couldn't really begin to get into the arguement of why what he was saying was complete and utter rubbish, didn't want to waste my time...

"You really should see my friend his dog is really great, It's really quite rare, he's all white, it's won at cruft's you know...."

ARGGGGGG.

I hope people have the common sense not to fall for this sort of rubbish, i can see how lots of people who are told by others to breed, go ahead and do, because of advice like his.

Just thought i'd share this, it's just unbelievable, accosted by a complete stranger into breeding my bitch, purely for profit. absolutely amazing.

ARGHHH!! My pet hate *lol*. This is probably how Ruby's old owner got thinking of breeding her. She's a boxer too - of apparently very good lines, and has spent her whole life making puppies and living in squalor until now. She's in a real mess, and its heartbreaking to see especially seeing as she's the most gentle and loving dog I have ever met. I'm not against careful and infrequent breeding, but people like that man you met make my blood boil.

The other week we went to the park. Now Ruby has very saggy boobs, as she'd had her umpteenth litter 12 weeks before we got her (theyre still very very saggy but then they were literally down to the floor). A man stopped me and said "'As she 'ad pups then?"...to which I replied "Yes unfortunately - poor lass is in a right mess" and went on to explain her story of being dumped to be PTS in an Irish pound along with her 4 pups. He then said "Where are they then? You sellin' 'em? How much?". At this point I started to get a bit narked and told him that they had all been found good homes thank you very much. He replied "You oughtta breed her again - its best for her cos shes so used to it and you could make a packet - I'd have some of them". I must admit I shouted at him at this point that Ruby was now spayed and her days of torture are now over, to which he replied "What the $£*& did you do that for, with boxers you can make a packet - are you daft?". I cant repeat what I told him.......

<<<it's won at cruft's you know...." >>>>

Dont all crufts winners breed from dogs they nothing about and without papers and then flog the pups for £100 ???

these people have absolutely no idea what damage they do,

it's people that say those things that get people who wouldn't normally think about breeding thinking, 'hang on, £100 x 6 puppies = ££££'
oh, it makes me sooo bl**dy angry.

He knew nothing about my dog, he's met her for like 30 seconds in the street, why did he automatically think ahhhh 'bitch = puppies, puppies = cash'
It's staggering.

I especially liked the 'Rare' Cruft's winning White Boxer stud dog, you don't come across one of those everyday.

It's just a shame we cant elect to have idiots castrated as easily as our dogs ;)

I've seen pictures of ruby and she's adorable :D and sooo much happier looking now she's loosing the boobies :o
- By KathyM [gb] Date 16.11.03 12:08 UTC
Thanks Wishfairy (I feel now that I'm missing some link to you on another board? *lol*). Ruby's boobies are definitely shrinking, but the infected feet are causing trouble (think it might be pododermatitis/infected licksores). Nightmare....:(
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 17.11.03 08:59 UTC
:( Poor baby.

I'm sure you'll get it sorrted out though. Just a shame the grounds always cold and wet at this time of year, I'm sure that couldn't help :(
- By KathyM [gb] Date 17.11.03 19:30 UTC
No it doesnt *sigh* :( But, good news is we've got her on a new diet (NatureDiet as from today), got some coal tar and tea tree soap, and some tea tree and lavender spray (as an antiseptic) and echinacea tablets for her immune system. I sound like a hippy now, but other methods (weeks and weeks of antibios etc etc) arent shifting it *lol*, so time for a new approach. :)
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 17.11.03 19:42 UTC
I'm a hippy at heart too and tea tree is a great antiseptic, I use it all the time on allsorts :)

Keep us up to date on how she's doing.

Oh and it's the DP site I've been seeing Ruby on ;)
- By KathyM [gb] Date 18.11.03 12:52 UTC
Ahaaaa Wishfairy - shall watch out for you over there :D Thanks for the help :D
- By jolanta30 [gb] Date 17.11.03 22:59 UTC
Add some enzymes and acidophilus in there as well. They are worth their weight in gold for a healthier dog.
- By KathyM [gb] Date 18.11.03 12:51 UTC
Hi Jolanta
Are they in probiotics? NatureDiet have asked me to trial a new product for them which is a probiotic powder :)
Very excited *lol*

Kathy, Ive only recently put Bradley (6 month old boxer) on nature diet. Is there a knack of openning the carton without a) spraying the kitchen and B) flicking meat in Bradleys face c) without the use of bad language.
Bradley now sits behind the door and peaks around every so often to check on progress, any hint of trouble from the carton he gets a responsible person i.e and eight year old to help.
- By KathyM [gb] Date 18.11.03 17:01 UTC
Hi Emma :) I laughed so much at your post, because we have the same problem! In fact I posted about it on another board, but it seems there are only a couple of us that have this problem. The others say they run a knife round 3 sides and just tip it out. I tried this and squeezed a bit to hard, and ended up with NatureDiet all over my hands and up my arm *lmso*. If I hear of a way, I'll let you know ;)

Edited to add: Lovely to meet another Boxer owner!
- By EMMA DANBURY [gb] Date 18.11.03 17:18 UTC
Kathy like wise there are very few boxer owners that i come into contact with

That should take you to Ruby's homepage :D

emma - use a sharp knife and slice around the top edges of the pack to get the top off.
- By EMMA DANBURY [gb] Date 18.11.03 17:08 UTC
Its the insertion of the knife that causes the intial problem. Im very prone to accidents in the kitchen. So Im slightly restricted to how sharpe the knife is. What I do is insert the knife in (juice usually flies out at this point especially if Im suited and late for work). Then I ease it around the edge and remove the top which usually ends up face down on the floor. Then upside down with the carton into his bowl which by now has got fed up and made its own way back into Bradleys crate.
- By cissy Date 18.11.03 17:21 UTC
ok if desperate , put the pack in the fridge overnight and the juice will solidify, thereby ending flying juice problem??? Can B cope with cold food?
Use a spoon to scoop it out, garnish and serve.
- By KathyM [gb] Date 18.11.03 17:28 UTC
Garnish?? *shock* Am I neglecting Ruby by just slamming it in her bowl without a garnish? *lmso*

Similar thing has happened to me with my boxer - I was out on a walk when a lady stopped me and said how she had a boxer too, and that when mine is a bit older perhaps we could get them to mate as 'they go for £500 quid a throw'!

You can imagine though how some people with dogs that don't have the knowledge that I have gained from this site, would jump at the chance :(
- By devonpoppy [gb] Date 16.11.03 12:44 UTC
They may not have the Knowledge but surely they would have a brain.
my dogs are my life to me they are like my children needless to say i would strive to do right by them at all times this quite clearly would not be a good thing for anydog and the people that do it should be ashamed.
- By Fillis Date 16.11.03 15:16 UTC
My two best stories are when we were out with just our boy (we take them to town in turns) we were offered £250 for him by an Irishman who said he would make a good fighting dog in Ireland. But for that kind of money he would expect collar and lead to be included!
The other was when we were approached and told that even for a mongrel, our bitch was so lovely we would probably get close to £100 for her puppies, if they looked like her - the lady telling us this then said she would pay £50 for one, and she didn't have much money!
So much for our pedigree wheaten show dogs :(
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 16.11.03 19:15 UTC

>>even for a mongrel<< lol - you must have been gobsmacked!

Am i right in thinking that white boxers are considered a fault in the showring?
I could be completely wrong. So could someone please correct me?
Dean
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 16.11.03 19:53 UTC
You're quite right Dean. White is a major fault in Boxers, and they can never be shown. So "he's won at Crufts" is a load of cobblers!
:)
- By carolyn Date 16.11.03 19:54 UTC
Its true Dean and even now some breeders drown the white ones
- By Brainless [gb] Date 16.11.03 20:29 UTC
Most nowadays though have them BAER hearing tested, and if hearing sell to a pet home at reduced price.
