Topic Dog Boards / General / Size. What size?
- By Jackie H [us] Date 18.11.03 07:38 UTC
Having been following another thread (Help me pick a breed) isn't it interesting what some of us think of as medium anything from a Sheltie to an Aus or an Elk. Must say I have always thought of the Sheltie as next door to a toy and some people would class the Aus. & Elk as large.

At what size does small stop and medium start, and is it height or weight?

Edit to say, what breed do you have and what size do you think it is?

Maybe it depends what breed you have yourself? I really only consider a few breeds to be large because a Malamute is a *normal* dog size to us :D Therefore only dogs bigger than Mals appear big to us ;)

My friend has 4 GRs and they always seem so small to me ;) Another friend has 2 GSDs and they also seem small

:)

I was brought up with terriers and Dobes and Rotts seems big dogs to me but now I have Danes they seem smaller and I don't think I could go back to a small breed now. My pups get under my feet but people say they are big. I suppose it depends on your perspective or small and large.

THats something thats always confused me as well. I have a labrador and get lots of conflicting info about whether my breed is medium or large.

Personally I think there somewhere in between

(what a cop out :D)

Sam's a about the size of a lab so I think of her as a small medium -lol.

I'm always surprised when people say look at the 'big' dog to their kids :)

We have GSP's and I would say they are a medium sized dog :)

Must say I think of my Elks as medium but the vet and most other people say they are large and my sister who owns giants (Newfies) thinks they are small. So I guess it is like most things a matter of perception.

Who cares about size, its what you do with it that counts! :) I love trailing the fields and woods with Morse while others enjoy chillling out with their laid back dogs. Some small dogs like JRTs seem to be powerpacks of energy, while big greyhounds can just about make it from food bowl to basket. Size is deceptive.

OK you looking for a fight :D No, you are right size is only one thing we look for in our dogs but yes it can matter, after all we all have to buy a car to accomodate our dogs and if you pocket only runs to a Mini the a mini dog is what you need ;)

LOL Jackie H :D A college friend found this out the hard way when she rescued a beautiful lurcher bitch pup who has now grown way beyond expectations and fills her flat. She used to come in saying hopefully " Do they grow much more after 6 months?" :)

It's funny that you should say that, as I was looking at the 'Discover Dogs' site yesterday and they class the Aussie as large :) When our's stands next to our friend's GSD, she certainly isn't :D She is only 21kg - that isn't big either.

I would certainly put Aussies as medium.
