I was wondering, at what point does a male puppy start showing sexual behavior? My puppy is now 8 months old and has not shown any sexual behavior yet.. humping legs n such (not that I want him to start). is it possible that he wont?

Mine never showed any sexual behavior to legs, cushions ect. The only time they showed any was towards other dogs by humping them. Be happy urs isn't because it can be a real nuisance with them wanting to hump everything :D

My puppy showed sexual behavior as soon as I brought him home at 9 weeks old! :( I couldn't believe it.

All puppy's do the humping thing when they are young, my retriever was forever humping things when she was 8 weeks old but it was an excitement (and occaisionally a dominance) thing rather than sexual, until they reach adolescence that is!

8 weeks = like he was auditioning for a x rated film!
10 months = like he has got a 'headache'
reached his peak early! :P

my 15week old dobe has shown some signs of sexual behaviour for the past 2 weeks or so - mainly with other dogs (mostly collies!)

guinness was only hom a few weeks too before he humped his bed and tryed my sons legs! we ended up taking the bed off him and that seemed to have calmed him down but he does get very 'excited' when other dogs are around him.

My mini never has either! I have sometimes wondered about this. Maybe they're just much more coy/refined than other breeds :-)

well our 5 month old cavalier has always humped her favourite teddy soft toy and seems to be doing it more as she gets older - thing is (obviously) she's a GIRL! I didn't think we'd even be thinking about humping behaviour with a bitch but hey, there you go.....

Do you reckon it could be a sexual thing? If you watch it, she humps for about 5 mins and then sinks back into an exhausted blissful state, lying down, cradling Mr Ted in her arms! It looks SO funny, it absolutely makes us hoot with laughter (although am v glad no kiddies around.....) Thing is I think that doggie anatomy wouldn't support the argument that she could be *enjoying* herself physically the way she's humping it (it looks like a human couple, both chests facing each other) - i've always thought that she's just playing & is excited. Also i've always thought that she's pretended that the teddy's a puppy friend for her and has played rough & tumble with it like she might have with her brother and sister before we had her - so i have def wondered if its a dominance display, being as clearly ruby always wins the playfights, what with Mr Teddy not being able to fight back being as he's a stuffed toy!

Its funny you should say that, my retriever used to do this with my other dog, and when she had finished she (how can i put it politely!) started leaking a little like a male would. Quite discusting and very wierd. I'm told it is just dominance and excitement, but exactly what kind of excitement i am not entirely sure!!

I bought Buddy a large red stuffed dog called 'Clifford' (from Argos) which he loved on a regular basis. Since he's been castrated he does not bother clifford as often as he used to. Saying that when Buddy is in the mood he will seek out Clifford which is not difficult due to the size of the thing and will drag him from wherever i've tidied him away to and go at him like a maniac. Clifford is worth his weight and size in gold not only as a passive lover but a rough and tumble plaything for Buddy.

When i bought my GSD home at 7 weeks i let him have an old cats bed (washed and dried first) -
he started humping it straight away - i think it was the "cat nip" smell, he used to get really agressive if i took it off him, and also fell over alot running round with the inside circle in his mouth. I cut the inside smaller, threw the rest of the bed away. but he still tried to hump the bit he was left with, so i threw that away too. now he has lots of soft toys and hasn't so far tried to hump them....
maybe cat-nip is a sexual thing for dogs too !
